    CASPAR STRAUSS AUGSBURG CIRCA 1595 - 1663

    Est: €4,000 - €6,000

THE TRIUMPH OF NEPTUNE AND AMPHITRITE measurements note 260 by 392 mm pen and black ink and grey wash over traces of black chalk PROVENANCE Bears stamped inventory number, verso: 80991 NOTE The attribution was made by Dr. Tilman Falk, in a letter of 21 January 2002 to the present owners. Only some 16 drawings by the artist are known, so this is an important addition to the corpus of his graphic work. Falk dates the drawing to about 1630, the year when Strauss succeeded Johann Mathias Kager as official "Stadtmaler" in his native Augsburg. Three other drawings of parts of friezes with similar motifs are known, two in Munich and one in Bremen.
