NOTE

The attribution was made by Dr. Tilman Falk, in a letter of 21 January 2002 to the present owners. Only some 16 drawings by the artist are known, so this is an important addition to the corpus of his graphic work. Falk dates the drawing to about 1630, the year when Strauss succeeded Johann Mathias Kager as official "Stadtmaler" in his native Augsburg. Three other drawings of parts of friezes with similar motifs are known, two in Munich and one in Bremen.
