''Japanese Gardens at the Pacific Coast Calif'', signed lower right: Franz Strahalm, signed again and titled on the stretcher, oil on canvas. Note: The present work depicts the Oriental Japanese Gardens built in 1924 by Adolph Bernheimer, a German-born cotton baron, on a dramatic cliff overlooking the Pacific Ocean in Pacific Palisades. The property was a showplace for Japanese horticulture and Bernheimer's private residence there housed his extensive collection of Asian art. The property averaged 5,000 visitors per week until around 1941 when anti-German and Japanese sentiment led to vandalism and a decline in visitors. Bernheimer died in 1944 and by the late 1940s the gardens had slipped into disrepair and were vacated. In 1951 the Asian art and objects were sold at auction and around the same time all of the structures were demolished on the property. Today an apartment complex lies at the west end of the property and the rest of the land remains vacant. Copies of period postcards depicting the residence and land accompany the lot. Est: $15,000 - $20,000

FRANZ STRAHALM (American, 1879-1935) Country Path, 1922 Oil on board 84 x 47 inches (213.4 x 119.4 cm) Signed and dated lower left: Franz Horst / 1922 Proceeds from the sale of this lot will benefit the Dallas Lighthouse for the Blind. Born in Vienna, Austria, Franz Strahalm studied in Hamburg, Germany. He eventually moved to Dallas and opened the "School of Fine Painting," a private art studio. In 1922, due to frequent misspellings and mispronunciations of "Strahalm" in the press, he changed his name to Frank Horst and painted under that name until 1923. Although most recognized for his landscape paintings, Franz Strahalm also painted portraits and still-lifes. The proceeds from the sale of this painting will directly benefit renovations for The Dallas Lighthouse for the Blind.

He later settled in Dallas. Strahalm is best known for his landscapes, but also painted portraits and still lifes. This work is an excellent example of his large landscapes, characterized by vivid colors that invoke atmospheric qualities, like misty mornings or late afternoon light, and richly textured surfaces. The combination of impressionistic qualities and the rough, granular surface create a unique vision of the Texas landscape.
