FRANZ STRAHALM (American, 1879-1935) New Mexican Landscape Oil on artist's board 10 x 14 inches (25.4 x 35.6 cm) Inscribed verso: Grannie gave this picture, / to Chris Dublin 1964 November With its Impressionist palette and luminosity, New Mexican Landscape is one of Franz Strahalm's finest paintings of the Sangre de Christo Mountains. Born in Vienna, he studied art throughout Europe and immigrated to Mexico City in 1909. Two years later, Strahalm moved to San Antonio where he founded the San Antonio School of Fine Painting. The Colorado and Pecos Rivers and the pueblos near Taos and Santa Fe counted among his favorite landscape settings. In New Mexican Landscape, he features a tiny adobe house nestled between the blazing field of Indian paintbrush and the mountain base.
