When he was 15 years old, he became the youngest member ever elected to the Rockport Art Association in Rockport, Massachusetts, and eventually became a member of the Salmagundi Club and other art associations. He moved to South Carolina in the 1980's and painted views of the low country and coastal regions in the area. He was a talented painter, teacher, and art restorer, and wanted to be remembered as an American Expressionist painter. The painting is in good condition. The overall size is 34 1/2 x 36 1/2 in., and the sight size is 29 1/2 x 31 1/2 in. Rockport, Massachusetts. According to a friend of his, Clyde Williams of Beaufort, South Carolina, after two years of study Stacks was apprenticed to William Lester Stevens (1888-1969) for three years, then to Lloyd Wesley Broome to learn more about color, and then to William J. Potter (1883-1964) to learn the use of a palette knife*. Stacks returned to North Carolina, earning a living as a landscape painter, art conservator and sculptor. In a newspaper interview in the early 1970s, he described his sculpture as 'colorful abstractions made by gluing pieces of slate to masonite*, then painting them". Stacks lived in Blowing Rock, NC, in the late 1960s and early 1970s, painting mountain landscapes. He was a friend of artist Philip Moose (1921- 2001) from Charlotte and Blowing Rock, with whom he sometimes exhibited. As an art restorer, he claimed to have worked on more than 200 paintings by Eliot Daingerfield. He lived the latter part of his life in Charlotte. Sight Size: 29 1/2 x 31 1/2 in.
