      Wilhelm Ferdinand Souchon (1825-1876). Portrait of Martha Beate Runkel (1821-1899), 1850. Oil on canvas, size 65 x 55 cm (25 2/3 x 21 2/3 inches). Frame dimensions 80 x 70 cm (31 1/2 x 27 1/2 inches). Signed and dated on the right. Label with text in German on the reverse side of the subframe. (Born in Halberstadt, Wilhelm Ferdinand Souchon (1825 -1876) was of Huguenot descent, and a student of Auguste Remy in Berlin. From 1849 to 1851, he studied with Hermann Ansch?tz, Wilhelm von Kaulbach and Moritz von Schwind in Munich. From 1851 to 1854, he lived in Rome in the circle of young German artists such as Franz-Dreber and Ludwig Pietsch, studying primarily the Italian people's life. He frequented the house of the Prussian Ambassador Count Usedom. Prince William, the future King of Prussia, bought some Italian genre paintings by Souchon for the Babelsberg Palace. From 1855 to 1867, he lived in Leipzig and painted portraits and religious motifs. 1867, he settled in Weimar and became director of costumes at the court theater. He painted portraits and genre paintings with motifs from the Thuringian people life. In Berlin, he directed a workshop for a few years. Paintings by Souchon are in the collection of the Wroclaw Museum, among others.)

The varnish has been renewed. The inspection under UV light reveals a touch-up to the lower right margin, and some strokes of retouching to the lower part of the sitter’s body.
