      Jean - Francois de Sompsois (1755-1797) pastel signed and dated lower left De Sompsois Pinnit ai 1778 Pastel marked on painting De Sompfois Pinnit ai 1758 Eighteenth century French miniaturist and son of a Swiss mercenary in the service of the Duc de Gevres. Worked mostly on ivory and vellum and occasionally in pastel. He was in Russia in 1755 to paint The Empress Catherine II (called Catherine the Great) several times. Sompsois is recorded again in Russia from 1757 until 1763 this time as a secret agent, during which time he painted numerous miniatures. In 1778 he was working at The Hague where he did pastel portraits. Sompsois is one of the few recorded pastel artists before the year 1800.

      eight by de Sompsois, France, active 1778 Each oval, in rectangular velvet frame, two portraits of Elizabeth Petrovna (1709-1762) wearing the Imperial crown and the order of St. Andrew, and a further four female portraits with unidentified sitters, two dressed as Diana the Huntress, two portraits of Catherine I (1684-1727) and Peter the Great (1672-1725), unfinished, all by de Sompsois, a portrait of Francis I of Austria (1708-1765), after Liotard, a portrait of William V of Orange (1748-1806) and another of an unidentified gentleman, both by unknown artists, apparently unmarked, each glazed in gilt frame the frame 9 1/4 in.
