Somerville was born into an artistic family and picked up her first paintbrush the same year she learned to talk. By the time she was ten, she had already exhibited at the Royal Society of Drawing and had a solo exhibition at the Claridge Gallery, London. Her work was admired and collected by Walter Sickert, John Lavary and Matthew Smith. Sickert purchased a work from her and claimed it was one of the finest landscapes he had seen by a living artist. Somerville travelled Europe widely before settling in Suffolk. She painted the coast around Aldeburgh many times, taking inspiration from the legacies of the Impressionists as well as John Constable and Philip Wilson Steer. *Artist's Resale Right may apply to this lot.

§ Margaret Scott (Peggy) Somerville (British, 1918-1975) View from an upstairs window at the Stone House, Middleton, Suffolk, the artist's home signed lower right "Peggy Somerville" pastel h:27 w: 37 cm Provenance: Private collection, Suffolk. Peggy Somerville was born into an artistic family, with both her parents being recognised artists, and she herself learnt to paint at an extremely early age. By the time she was three years old, some of her watercolours had been selected for an exhibition at the Royal Society of Drawing - the committee not realising her young age. Her talent was recognized by many noted artists, including Sir John Lavery, and she became famous nationally and globally as a child prodigy. At the age of nine, she had her first solo show at the Claridge Gallery in London, which saw over a hundred of her pieces sold. However, Peggy did not continue in formal art education after his early success; after a few months at the Royal Academy Schools, she left to become a Land Girl. She settled in adult life in Suffolk, near Aldeburgh, where she continued to paint throughout her life, working in a style that identified her work with the British Impressionists.

OIL PAINTING: MARGARET SCOTT (PEGGY) SOMERVILLE (1918-1975) APRIL SHOWERS signed and dated 1929, signed and dated again, inscribed with the title and artist's address, The Old Ford Farm, Ashford, Middlesex on a label verso, artist's board, 25 x 30cm Provenance: Hugh Stokes. Exhibited: Claridge Gallery, London 1929. Hailed as a child prodigy, it was inevitable that Peggy Somerville's early pictures would sharply divide opinion. Sir John Lavery said he was "completely mystified by [her] extraordinary genius" and the leading critic and art historian Mary Chamot thought "the pictures small in size, but vital in spirit..." R H Wilenski thought otherwise, her pictures being "like those of her 50,000 adult colleagues... a shocking degradation of the original art of Constable". April Showers may be compared with The Cornfield exhibited at the ROI in 1929 and illustrated Reiss (S), Peggy Somerville An English Impressionist, Woodbridge 1996, p30.
