          Est: £1,500 - £2,500

Stephan Abel Sinding (Norwegian, 1846-1922) Walkure (Brunhilda on Horseback) Bronze with a rich dark brown and black patina Signed Stephan Sinding Paris Inscribed AD. GeseLsch. vorn. H Gladenbeck u. Sohn. Dimensions: 31 in. (H)  Sinding was a sculptor of international repute, a native of Norway whose lived in Berlin before he married a Danish woman and settled in Paris. The Walkure depicts the Wagnerian heroine Brunhilda sweeping down the mountain, speeding on her furious steed in fierce anticipation of battle below. Brochner recounts that Sinding took a studio halfway up the Boulevard de Raspail in Paris especially so he could study horses going downhill. He spent hours in observation until one day a Normandy stallion became restless outside his window. He seized the opportunity to sketch the bared teeth and peculiar expression that is the hallmark of this wild and wind swept creature. Many of Sinding's works were bought by Carl Jacobsen (1842-1914), the son of the founder of Carlsberg Breweries, and can be found in the Carlsberg Glyptotek located in Copenhagen, Denmark. The Valhalla Frieze, in Bavaria, Germany, commissioned to illustrate Norse mythology similarly depicts violent displays of energy including a panel of mounted female amazons.

STEPHAN SINDING (Trondheim, Norway, 1846 - Paris, 1922). "Valkyrie", Paris, 1908. Bronze. Exhibitions: "European sculpture of the 20th century", European Museum of Modern Art (MEAM), Barcelona, 2014. Signed, dated and located. Measurements: 83 x 87 x 32 cm. Ornamental bronze sculpture representing a Valkyrie on horseback. Valkyries, from Norse mythology, are one of the best-known images of warrior women, and are a symbol of the union of beauty and fierceness. In modern art, Valkyries are depicted as beautiful maidens on winged horses, covered with helmets and armed with spears. However, some translations of the Norse "eddas" (compilations of myths) suggest that their mounts are actually terrible wolves. There is some agreement that the Valkyries fly over the battlefields, searching for the bodies of chosen warriors. Stephan Sinding was a long-time pupil of Albert Wolff in Berlin. He later lived in Paris, Rome, Oslo and Copenhagen. His style was greatly influenced by the naturalistic tendency of the Paris school, which is reflected in his works. "Mother Prisoner" won Sinding the medal of honour at the Paris Exhibition of 1899. His other works include a marble statue in Hylas (in the Royal Palace in Oslo) and The Night (a sleeping couple).

          Est: $600 - $900

Stephan Abel Sinding "Captive Mother", bronze on detached marble base, 9 x 14 x 8.25" Foundry mark: "Alit. Cis. Gladenbeck Berlin" Sinding first embarked on law studies in Christiania, but broke off to instead pursue a career in the arts. He took drawing and modeling classes first at the Royal School of Drawing in Christiania and then studied privately with sculptor Albert Wolff in Berlin. Sinding spent his adult life working in different places mostly Rome, Copenhagen, and finally Paris. From 1874 to 1875 he studied in Paris and picked up influences from the latest Realist tendencies in French sculptures, especially from Auguste Rodin and Paul Dubois. Sinding was met with poor recognition from the Norwegian public since his style was considered too modern. In 1883 he moved to Copenhagen, which he found a better working place, and had his breakthrough with the sculpture A barbarian woman carries her dead son home from the battle, created during a stay in Rome that same year. It was acquired by the brewer Carl Jacobsen, the son and heir of Carlsberg-founder Jacob Christian Jacobsen, who was a great admirer of both classical and modern sculpture and was building an ever-growing private collection which in the end turned into the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek. Sinding created a number of sculptures, among others Mother in Captivity, which won him the Grand Prix at the Exposition Universelle (1889), Two figures (1889), and Young woman at her husband's body / The Widow (1892). Many of Sinding's sculptures are credited to realism, but together with Danish sculptor Niels Hansen Jacobsen, among others, are by many considered much more in the style of Symbolism. An example of his symbolic work is his sculpture Valkyrjen (the valkyrie), a bronze cast of which stands in Churchill Park in Copenhagen.

Stephan Abel Sinding (1846-1922), Ride of the Valkyrie, c. 1910

          Est: €1,600 - €2,000

Bronze with dark and golden patina Denmark and Berlin, circa 1910 Stephan Abel Sinding (1846-1922) - Danish-Norwegian sculptor Base signed with 'Stephan Sinding' to one side Verso foundry mark 'Akt **' [Ges. Gladenbeck Berlin] Symbolist bronze statue of the scantily clad Valkyrie Brynhild on horseback, raised sword, galloping downhill Dynamic form; the hair, the cloak of the Valkyrie, the mane and tail of the horse brought to the front by the wind Naturalistic rock base Overall dimensions, with base: approx. 49 x 39 x 15 cm Good condition The large version of this bronze sculpture is in Churchill Park in Copenhagen and is an impressive example of the Norse mythology. The current highest auction record for a bronze sculpture of the Valkyrie is more than €11,000 This impressive bronze sculpture by Stephan Abel Sinding (1846-1922) dates from around 1910, at a time when the artist was based in Berlin. It is a rare copy with a sword differing from the more frequent version with a lance, and molded by the renowned foundry Gladenbeck in Berlin. The figure of Brynhild is based on a Nordic version of the Song of the Niebelungs, depicted here in form of a Valkyrie, a mythical young fighting woman. The bronze offers a haunting picture of the powerful and muscular Brynhild sitting on her horse pushed downhill by the wind. With this suspenseful figure, Sinding has skillfully brought a moment of concentrated energy to its extreme. One side of the base shows the signature 'Stephan Sinding'. On the back it reads 'Akt **' [Ges. Gladbeck Berlin]. The bronze is in good condition, showing light wear. The attached sword blade is a later addition and must be re fixed. The foundry mark has been abraded. The overall dimensions, with base, are approximately 49 x 39 x 15 cm. Stephan Abel Sinding (1846-1922) The Danish-Norwegian sculptor Stephan Sinding Abel studied philosophy and law in Christiana from 1865. Thereafter, he devoted himself to sculpture. From 1871, he lived in Berlin, where he was temporarily a student of Albert Wolff. He spent the end of his life in Paris. His most famous works include the portraits of the poets Henrik Ibsen and Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson placed in front of the National Theatre in Oslo.
