      PATH IN A BIRCH GROVE

      Est: -

Oil on canvas. Signed lower left: “J. Šimůnek 1905”. This grove of birch trees in soft pastel colors is a beautiful Impressionist-toned landscape from the early 20th century. After residing in Germany, where he studied drawing and painting under Professor Schönleber, Jaroslav Šimůnek returned to Bohemia and became a student of Antonín Slaviček. In 1922 he held an exhibition at the Rubeš Gallery. Šimůnek's main subjects are Prague neighborhoods and markets, his primary concern being the portrayal of Prague's special beauty. He went on to create a number of landscape paintings set in the region around Kouřim.
