Kansas City-born painter Fred Shane focused his artistic attention on rural America, representing the ordinary citizens of mid-Missouri and the Midwestern landscape. He was a professor of art at the University of Missouri, Columbia from 1932 until his retirement in 1941. In 1935, when the great Regionalist painter Thomas Hart Benton moved back to his home state of Missouri to paint a mural for the State Capitol and take up a position as head of the painting department at the Kansas City Art Institute, he and Fred Shane immediately established a warm friendship that lasted some forty years until Benton's death. Although Shane was by that time already a mature artist--having developed his own brand of humorous and sometimes cranky individuality through contact with such figures as Randall Davey, John Sloan, Robert Henri and Boardman Robinson--he was very much influenced by Benton's ideas about composition. Under Benton's influence his paintings because tighter and more ordered, and his forms acquired a greater sense of sculptural volume. Following his retirement, Shane maintained a studio and residence in Beverly Hills, California. HID04901242017
