        Hand-coloured aquatint after William A Sextie (1821-1887) published by Rudolph Ackermann, 191 Regent Street, May 15th, 1857 . 55 x 72 cm (21 5/8 x28 3/8 in) In 1854 Sextie painted "Saucebox" for Tom Parr. By 1860 Sextie was training horses at Rockley House, Marlborough, Wiltshire and was making a very good living at it. The coming of the railways had made the greatest change that racing had seen, and horses from Rockley House ran all over the country. Rara Avis, a grey filly half owned by Sextie and half by Mr James Clarke, ran 18 times in 1860 at places as far apart as Rochester and Chatham, Liverpool and Ludlow.

        WILLIAM A. SEXTIE (ENGLISH, 1821-1887) Tom Cannon on Eruption Watercolour William Sextie was an artist and a race horse trainer. Tom Cannon was a flat race jockey, he won 13 Classics, and was champion in 1872. After retiring he trained over the flat and over jumps, winning the Grand National in 1888. His daughter married Ernest Piggott, and was subsequently grandmother to Lester Piggott. 13¾ x 19¾ inches; 35 x 50 cm. Worldwide shipping available.         William Sextie (1821-1900). Water colour. Inscribed on the back board "Tom Cannon on Eruption". Signed lower left. 34cm x 49.5cm. Tom Cannon, Under glass. Sr. (April 1846 - 13 July 1917) was a British flat racing jockey and trainer. He won 13 British classics as a jockey, becoming champion in 1872. As a trainer, he trained classic winners, as well as winners over jumps, including the 1888 Grand National. He was the father of four jockey sons, including the six-times champion, Morny Cannon, and the great-grandfather of eleven-times champion, Lester Piggott.

        *Sextie (William A., 1821-1900). 'Theodore', Winner of St. Leger 1822, J. Jackson Up, oil on canvas, 63.5 x 76cm (25 x 30ins), gilt frame. Born in Cheltenham in 1821, William A. Sextie specialised in portraits of celebrated racehorses of the time, such as St. Blaise, Derby Winner in 1883, Fred Archer on Jerry, 1884, and Saucebox in 1854, which was published as a print by Ackermann in 1857. He was also a racehorse trainer, and by 1860, ran a very successful business from Rockley House in Marlborough, Wiltshire. It was in this same year that Sextie took on a fourteen year old apprentice, who became one of the greatest jockeys in the history of racing, Tom Cannon. (1) NOTE: the buyer's premium is 20.56%.
