Description

*Sextie (William A., 1821-1900). 'Theodore', Winner of St. Leger 1822, J. Jackson Up, oil on canvas, 63.5 x 76cm (25 x 30ins), gilt frame. Born in Cheltenham in 1821, William A. Sextie specialised in portraits of celebrated racehorses of the time, such as St. Blaise, Derby Winner in 1883, Fred Archer on Jerry, 1884, and Saucebox in 1854, which was published as a print by Ackermann in 1857. He was also a racehorse trainer, and by 1860, ran a very successful business from Rockley House in Marlborough, Wiltshire. It was in this same year that Sextie took on a fourteen year old apprentice, who became one of the greatest jockeys in the history of racing, Tom Cannon. (1)
