Jaroslav Serpan was a Czech-French painter, poet, writer and mathematician. He was declared missing on 17 May 1976 after a mountain hike in Ariège in the Pyrenees and his body was not found until May 1981. He moved in André Breton's inner circle and gradually moved from surrealism to informel. The present position of his work is inspired by Pop Art, which Serpan Dadaistically layers on the canvas in the form of collage, building an untold story. Jaroslav Serpan was a Czech-French painter, poet, writer and mathematician. He was declared missing on May 17, 1976 after a mountain tour in Ariège in the Pyrenees, and his body was not found until May 1981. He moved in the narrow circle of Andre Breton and gradually moved from surrealism to informalism. Ostreecs is one of the abstract works that was part of the author's group exhibition in 1977 in the Cistercian abbey of Beaulieu en Rouergue. The abbey abandoned during the French Revolution was saved from decay and became several galleries of contemporary art. Serpan's works have also been extensively exhibited in Paris, New York, Brussels, Munich and Turin. Technique: Mixed media on canvas, Signed: Lower left "Serpan"

Its agitated gestural brush strokes and coloring in bright yellow, with accents of white, blue and orange, give it a sparkling character and reminds of light reflexes or fireworks. As a contrast, the lower third of the image is mainly painted in white, with black brush strokes creating a connecting passage to the upper part. The work is signed lower left with gouache 'SERPAN', on the reverse titled, inscribed, dated and signed with blue felt pen 'CLK 12 55 x 40 cm Mars 1966 SERPAN' and additionally stamped with the artist's address stamp. The sheet margins are slightly rippled due to the technique, creased and with some age-related wear. The image is in very good condition. The sheet measures 64.9 x 49.8 cm. Jaroslaw Serpan (1922-1976) Born in Prague as a child to Russian parents in 1922, the family moved to Paris in 1922. There, Serpan studied biology and mathematics at the Sorbonne, but began to paint in 1940. He first joined the Surrealist movement. Later he was influenced artistically by Tàpies, Masson and Wols and developed his art toward informal. In 1959, Serpan took part in documenta 2 in Kassel. His works are based on an automatism-like style of painting, he structured their image dynamically, often with compositions of microforms.
