Portrait of a Young Italian woman

      Est: €10,000 - €15,000

SCHIAVONI, NATALE 1777 Chioggia - 1858 Venice Title: Portrait of a Young Italian woman. Technique: Oil on canvas. Measurement: 82.5 x 66.5cm. Notation: Signed lower left: N. Schiavoni f. Frame/Pedestal: Framed. Provenance: Private ownership, Germany. Natale Schiavoni is one of the most important painters and engravers of the late 18th and early 19th centuries in Italy. Apart from numerous pictures with historical or oriental themes, he devoted himself primarily to the genre of portraiture. Today, he is best known for his depiction of sensuous ladies, mostly shown in semi-portrait. The present painting - which has been in a private collection for about 50 years - shows one of these ladies and is thus representative of Schiavoni's oeuvre: through the interplay of a lascivious gaze, the open hair and the exposed décolleté, Schiavoni generates the image of a femme fatale who captivates the viewer. The strong green and orange of the noble fabrics surrounding her are in direct contrast to the sitter's ivory-like incarnate parts and lend her majestic elegance. Explanations to the Catalogue

    • Natale Schiavoni - Miniature Portrait of a Woman.
      Dec. 05, 2016

Natale Schiavoni - Miniature Portrait of a Woman.

      Est: $400 - $600

Natale Schiavoni (1777-1858) - Miniature Portrait of a Woman on Ivory. Signed. In an oval brass frame. 13cm X 11cm / 5.12in X 4.33in. Frame: 15.5cm X 13.5cm / 6.1in X 5.3in. Natale Schiavone (April 25, 1777 – April 15, 1858) was an Italian painter and engraver, mainly depicting history and portraits. Many of his paintings depict seductive nubile women. Schiavoni was born in Chioggia, near Venice, and is claimed by Perkins to be a distant descendant of Andrea Schiavoni, the Venetian painter. In Venice, he trained with Francesco Maggiotto, and later came under the influence of the Neoclassicism. He was peripatetic, traveling in 1800 to Trieste, and in 1810 to Milan, where he painted Eugene Beauharnais and the royal family. In Milan, he was able to frequent the studios of Appiani, Longhi, and Sabatelli. In 1816, Schiavoni was invited by the Austrian emperor to Vienna, to become the official portratist for the court. From there, he returned to Venice in 1821, where he became professor at the Academy of Fine Arts. He resided in the Palazzo Giustinian on the Grand Canal. He was awarded a gold medal at an exhibition in Brussels. Among his works are a Penitent Magdalene (1852) once on display in the National Gallery of Berlin; a painting on the same subject at the Vienna Museum; a Bacchante, once on display at the Stadel Gallery in Frankfort; and an Adoration of Shepherds, once on display at the British Museum, London. He was described by Pietro Selvatico as in coloring, highly skillful, but in shading, inimitably supreme. He died in Venice. His sons Felice (1803–68) and Giovanni (1804–48) were also painters of mythology and history. Among his followers was Antonio Zuccaro (1815–1892). Many of his paintings were engraved by Luigi Boscolo.

Oil on canvas Vienna, Austria, circa 1820 Attributed to Natale Schiavoni (1777-1858) - Italian painter and printmaker Verso with the old inscription 'Katharina Weidner-Waldmüller' Fine period frame Dimensions: 96 x 74 cm Good condition Provenance: previously owned by Katharina Weidner-Waldmüller, singer at the Kärntnertortheater in Vienna and wife of the famous Austrian painter Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller; Private collection, Austria Graceful nude attributed to the Italian Natale Schiavoni, who is renowned for his delightful depictions of beautiful women This painting is attributed to the Italian painter Natale Schiavoni. It depicts one of his chracteristic nudes before a cloudy sky. With her bare back, merely covered by a gauzy veil, to the viewer, the young woman has her head turned left and looks longingly into the distance. Schiavoni, who was nicknamed 'il pittore delle grazie' by his contemporaries, gained recognition for his sensual depictions of female nudes, often allegories of first love, seduction, malice or sadness. The latter enjoyed great popularity with the 19th century society. The present representation may be an allegory of virginity and virtue- an interpretation which is supported by the white rose bush in the left corner of the image. The painting is inscribed 'Katharina Weidner-Waldmüller' on the back of the canvas. It is in good condition according to age with fine craquelure. There are retouchings to the background as well as the body and partially the face. The edges are slightly rubbed due to framing. The frame shows some losses. The framed work measures 113 x 93 cm, the stretcher frame measures 96 x 74 cm. Natale Schiavoni (1777-1858) In 1793 Natale Schiavoni attended the drawing school of the painter Magiotto in the Farsetti Palazzo in Venice. From 1800 he lived in Trieste and enjoyed great success as a miniature painter. In 1810 he went to Milan and became a pupil of the portrait painter Alessandro Longhi. In addition to engravings he created oil paintings and portraits. After portraying the Viceroy of Italy and his family. Schiavoni received numerous commissions and in 1816 he was called to Vienna by Emperor Franz I. There he worked as a successful portrait painter of the imperial family and Viennese nobility. In 1921 he eventually returned to Venice where he held a professorship at the Academy of Fine Arts. In addition to his portraits Schiavoni created paintings with religious or mythological content and numerous depictions of female nudes.
