A passenger liner hugging a globe between sun and moon, the artist, Alda Sassi, found an expressive way to portray the far reaching shipping company, Italian Line. Influenced by Art Deco, the imagery is fairly abstract; nonetheless, the message is clear: Italian Line, whose flag is as high as the sun, is the best way to travel across the earth. Italia di Navigazione S.p.A. was founded in 1932 as a passenger line providing regular transatlantic service between Italy and the United States, and Italy and South America. It turned into a cruise business during the late 1960s and became a freight operator in 1981. This poster promotes its passenger service as a quick access to Italy and other European countries. Although there is little information about Alda Sassi (1928 - NA), his poster designs for shipping companies are popular collectibles. This is an Original Vintage Poster; it is not a reproduction. Condition B+ / B: restoration along vertical and horizontal folds; wrinkles and creases at edges; restored pin holes in corners. Sassi designed around a dozen posters, primarily for different Italian shipping companies in the post-war period, including The American Export Line, The Italian Line and the Societa di Navigazione. This image is one of the least common of her works and also one of the most abstract, with the unusual geometric formation in the sky above the Galileo Galilei.

ALDA SASSI (1929- ) 'Italian Line'/Central America. In another Sassi creation for Italian Line's service to Central America, the artist called upon mango-tinged waters and the stylized gyrations of an exotic couple in a carnival mood to get her promotional point across (see PAI-XXXI, 157). Here, however, she solidifies matters without changing any of the primary elements from the previously seen design: the couple parties on, the ship sails on and ultimately we still arrive in Central America. Only now everything is set against a sold black background to ensure the unwavering focus of the viewer at large.
