Salmon studied under Barye, Hadouin and Gaucherel. He made his debut at the Salon in 1859. As a sculptor he produced small bronzes of animals, but abandoned this for etching. He collaborated on an illustrated edition of Victor Hugo's works. In 1886 he printed a set of JW's Venice etchings. These are now in the National Gallery of Scotland. Emile-Frederic Salmon French, 1840-1913 levrette (a seated whippet) signed: E. Salmon bronze, dark green patina 55 cm., 216/8 in. Emile-Frederic Salmon was the father of Andre Salmon, the poet and art critic credited with inventing the name Les Demoiselles d'Avignon for Picasso's painting. He was a pupil of Antoine-Louis Barye and Edmond Hedouin and made his debut at the Salon of 1859, when he specialised in small bronzes, mostly animalier. He moved to St. Petersburg in 1898 and there concentrated on watercolours, drawings and engravings.
