Emile-Frederic Salmon was the father of Andre Salmon, the poet and art critic credited with inventing the name Les Demoiselles d'Avignon for Picasso's painting. He was a pupil of Antoine-Louis Barye and Edmond Hedouin and made his debut at the Salon of 1859, when he specialised in small bronzes, mostly animalier. He moved to St. Petersburg in 1898 and there concentrated on watercolours, drawings and engravings.
