Abram Salm Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, Landscape painter

Abraham Salm clearly loved the Indonesian landscape and made numerous paintings depicting the enticing sights of Eastern Java. As a merchant in Surabaja and later on an owner of a tabacco plantation in Malang, he stayed for approximately twenty-nine years in Indonesia. During this time he made sketches and, although little is known about his artistic process, it has been suggested by Jan Veth he later developed his sketches as oil paintings in The Netherlands. In the second half of the nineteenth century his paintings of exotic Indonesia became popular via the prints made by Johan Conrad Greive Jr. and commissioned by influential art dealer Frans Buffa & Zonen.

De waterval Baón tusschen Passaroean en Lawang' / A waterfall on Eastern Java titled and signed 'A. Salm' (on a label on the reverse) oil on panel, unframed, 15,5x22,5 cm Abraham Salm clearly loved the Indonesian landscape and made numerous paintings depicting the enticing sights of Eastern Java. The present lot possibly depicts the Baong waterfall between Passarouan and Lawang, close to Malang where Salm lived. The painting style is typical for nineteenth century explorers who were influenced by the romantics of the first half of the nineteenth century. The tranquil landscape becomes exciting by the heavy dripping of the waterfall and the people depicted are well aware of the dangers the waterfall holds. One can almost hear the noise of the water falling down on the rocks. Provenance: -David Nuysink (1838-1911) son-in-law of Abraham Salm, thence by descent to the present owner
