Cecil ffrench Salkeld ARHA (1904-1969) ELDERLY MAN ON A PATH, 1935 oil on canvas signed and dated lower left h:24  w:18 in. Provenance: Whyte's, 17 September 2002, lot 29; Private collection As a member of the Dublin Painters group, as well as a poet, playwright, dramatist, broadcaster, philosopher and owner of the Gayfield Press, Cecil Salkeld was at the forefront of the avant-garde in Irish arts and literature. He was a Renaissance man of his time who interlinked the arts in a way which he had observed in Germany but which was entirely forward-thinking for Ireland at the time. Salkeld's mother was an actress with the Abbey Theatre as well as a poet and playwright. His daughter Beatrice was married to Brendan Behan while his other daughter also pursued a career on the stage. He was producer of radio programmes on the arts, director of cultural events for An Tóstal as well as director of the Irish National Ballet. Salkeld, who was born in India, studied art in Germany at Kassell Kunstchule in the early 1920s under Ewald Dülberg, whose style was in the manner of the Rheinland Primitives. There he also came under the influence of Otto Dix and the New Objectivity movement and upon returning to Dublin, he aligned himself immediately with the modernists, adapting his style to contemporary life in the Irish capital. He exhibited with the New Irish Salon and the Radical Painters' Group among others. Among the artist's best-known work are his murals, a triptych completed in 1942, in Davy Byrne's pub, Dublin.

Cecil Ffrench Salkeld (1904-1969) That Little Tent of Blue

      Est: €2,000 - €3,000

Cecil Ffrench Salkeld (1904-1969) That Little Tent of Blue oil on board signed 'SALKELD' lower right and titled verso h:51  w:25.50 cm. Provenance: James Adam's and Bonhams, Dublin, 8th December 2009 lot 174; Private Collection Exhibited: Cecil Ffrench Salkeld, Exhibition Victor Waddington Gallery, May 1945 cat. no. 28 The title of this work, That Little Tent of Blue is based on Oscar Wilde's poem The Ballad of Reading Gaol: "Upon that little tent of blue/which prisoners call the sky" Salkeld is perhaps poking fun at some friends, who appear to be heading home after a night's drinking. Seen through a window, the two men are walking, or staggering, along a pavement, illuminated by a shaft of light. There is a deliberate sense of enigma in the scene, which contrasts the domestic calm of the interior, with a book and flower on the windowsill, with the inebriated antics of the pair outside. The setting is not specified, but is intended to evoke the atmosphere of a prison or institution, the two men being surrounded by tall buildings and darkened windows. Born in Chittagong, India in 1904, Cecil Ffrench Salkeld grew up in Assam. When he was five years old, his father died and his mother returned to her home country, Ireland, where she worked as an author and was also an actor at the Abbey Theatre. As a child, Cecil attended an Irish summer school on the Aran Islands, where his teacher was Éamon de Valera. Although not involved in the War of Independence, in 1920 Salkeld was briefly imprisoned in Mountjoy Jail. The following year he went to Kassel in Germany, to study printmaking and illustration. He married Irma Taesler and in 1924 the couple settled in Ireland. Two years later he won the Taylor Scholarship with his painting The Builders. Salkeld's portrait of actor F. J. McCormick is in the Abbey Theatre, and in 1941 he painted murals, depicting well-known Dublin characters, in Davy Byrne's bar in Duke Street. He was active in Dublin's literary world, co-editing, along with Francis Stuart, the magazine To-Morrow. After a period in Germany, in 1937 he returned to Dublin and set up Gayfield Press, hand-printing Dublin Poets and Artists, pamphlets in which original woodcuts were matched with poems. One of his plays, on life in Germany, was produced in 1943 by the New Theatre Group. He also contributed articles to the Bell and Envoy literary magazines. Salkeld's interests extended to dance, and he became the first director of the Irish National Ballet. He was the inspiration for the character Michael Byrne in Flann O'Brien's 1939 novel At-Swim-Two-Birds. Generally undated, his paintings vary between surrealism and a realism inspired by the Neue Sachlichkeit art of Otto Dix and Georg Grosz. Peter Murray, March 2023

From the school developed the first National Ballet company whose performances were enhanced by a host of visiting international stars. Ballet was naturally to feature in a number of works by Salkeld. According to Cara,Sidney Waddington's grand-daughter,Sidney was very interested in dance and ballet in particular which is probably why she bought this work.

Cecil Ffrench Salkeld ARHA (1904-1969) FIGURE COMPOSITION - AN ALLEGORY OF TEMPTATION signed in monogram, inscribed and dated [2 September 1923] on reverse watercolour, gouache and gold ink on paper 30 by 23cm., 12 by 9in. Inscribed on reverse: "Painted in the year 1923, 2nd September, RŸsnov bei BrŸsov in Romania". This work is the first known record of Salkeld's travels in Romania, painted at the mere age of 19. A precocious artist, Salkeld first enrolled at the Dublin Metropolitan School of Art in 1919, where he quickly mastered basic drawing and painting techniques. Within two years he had left to further his artistic studies at the Kassel Academy in Germany, where he received tutelage from Ewald Dulberg (1888-1933). Here too he encountered the New Objectivity movement with which Otto Dix is associated. Salkeld's interest in the starkly outlined forms of German avant-garde woodcuts, as well as the brightly coloured and decorative surfaces of Eastern European folk art, here combine to produce a work of indubitably good design and visual appeal. As a member of the Dublin Painters group, as well as a poet, playwright and owner of the Gayfield Press, Cecil Salkeld was at the forefront of the avant-garde in Irish arts and literature. He studied art in Kassell in the early 1920s, coming under the influence of Otto Dix and the New Objectivity movement. Upon returning to Dublin, he aligned himself immediately with the modernists, showing works with the New Irish Salon and the Radical Painters' Group among others. Reviewing an exhibition of his at the Victor Waddington Galleries in 1945, the Dublin Magazine commented on Salkeld's "original, sombre palette, intellectually rather than emotionally conceived". The present work is thought to date to the 1940s and may relate to a series of panels which Salkeld painted for Davy Byrne's pub, including one titled 'Night: Party at the End of the Day' (ref. Snoddy, pp.585-587).
