Figural Wood Carving Attr. to Seiji Saito

        Est: $200 - $400

Attributed to Seiji Saito (Japanese, b. 1933). Given the Baum's association to the Brooklyn Museum Art School and the Art Student's League, it appears likely they were acquainted. A carved wood abstracted figure on circular wood base, signed and dated 1966 to base. Ht. 23.5". From the Estates of Reiko (Sakagami) Baum (1927-2021) and Michael Baum (1933-2021)   Both Reiko and Michael passed away within 4 months of one another in 2021 at the famed Man O' War horse farm in Lexington, Kentucky -- a passion that enveloped them later in life.   Reiko and Michael met one another in New York City during the 1950s, when both were attending fine art programs in Brooklyn, NY, and shared many similar passions for over 50 years of marriage. Michael Baum started a high end framing company called Framemasters, where they produced museum-quality frames. Reiko was an accomplished painter, exhibiting heavily in the 1950s and 60s along with fellow Japanese painters, American avant-garde and other exhibitions and venues.   Both were avid collectors of modern art and craft. Reiko was involved in a number of Japanese tea organizations, resulting in an exceptional Collection of Yixing and other teapots, as well as a library of Japanese and Chinese works. Both were supportive of fellow contemporary artists at this time as well. Modernist paintings and works on paper are an exceptional assemblage of New York artists working during the 60s and 70s. Many are dedicated to Michael and Reiko. Many are artist proofs. The works of Michael and Reiko Baum themselves are forward thinking and exceptional, and while they didn't often exhibit work later in life, are emblematic of their collecting style.   The vast majority of the Collection offered were present in the Baum's New York City home.
