DANIEL SAINT (FRENCH, 1778-1847) Portrait Miniature of Lola Montez Oval, oil, 8.75 x 6.25cm In an ornate frame with carved and inlaid amber Signed Daniel Saint made many portraits of influential French families, including the Bonaparte family. He received the award Knight of the Legion of Honour. Although we are accustomed to the cult of 'celebrity' it is difficult now to comprehend the sensation that Lola Montez created in mid-19th century Europe. Headstrong, impatient and dynamic she was an explosive charge of sexual energy that brokered no resistance. She was also excessively proud that her mother, Eliza, was an Oliver of Castle Oliver, and emphasised her ascending 'background'. Her father Edward Gilbert, however, was a penny-less officer in the army in India who died in 1823. Unable to control the child, her mother sent her to her father's relatives in Scotland in the hope that a stricter education would tame the queer, wayward Indian girl. In vain, she eloped aged sixteen with another penny-less Indian army officer, Lieutenant James. This marriage quickly failed and she fled to London and reinvented herself as Lola Montez - The Spanish Dancer - she caused a stir, not so much for the proficiency of her acting and dancing, but for her sheer physical allure. Some spoil-sport (probably female) revealed her to be ordinary 'Mrs James' so she moved to the continent. She was an immediate smash-hit, her reputation enhanced by an affair with Franz Lizt. Duels were fought over her, with the newspaper Baron Dujanier being killed by the Comte de Beauvallon. This necessitated decamping from Paris to Munich. Here the King, Ludwig I of Bavaria, was so captivated that she became his official mistress. Insisting on her high-birth he created her Gräfin von Landsfeld, installed her in her own palace. Her power and influence over the King, and intrusion into affairs of state, alienated the conservative ruling class. Her apogee of power and fame collapsed with the revolutions of 1848 and she was forced into exile in London. Here she married George Heald, a young man in line to a fortune. His relations brought an action of bigamy against her and Heald was found drowned. Nothing to be done but to clear out and so she took the United States by storm. Her dances became a sensation and popular songs were written about her. She married Patrick Hull, a newspaper tycoon. Later though, Hull accused her of having an affair with the local doctor who was subsequently murdered. About as far as she could go, she settled on Australia and became the idol of miners and prospectors. The staid society of Sydney found her famous 'Spider Dance' too much, especially at that stage when she lifted her skirts to the point where it became apparent to her audience that she was not wearing knickers. She shipped out to San Francisco in 1856, the trip blighted by the disappearance, unexplained, of her manager. Her final years were sad enough, showing the effects of syphilis, she devoted herself to helping women in bad circumstances and reminiscing about her fantastic life. She died in 1861, just thirty-nine years old.

D’abord peintre, il eut l’idée, sous la Révolution, de rassembler à Paris les monuments que la suppression des couvents exposait à la destruction. Le dépôt organisé par lui aux Petits-Augustins fut érigé en musée des Monuments français en 1796. Il restaura divers tombeaux royaux de Saint-Denis. Il sera le conservateur du musée des Petits Augustins se consacrera encore à de nombreux sauvetages, dont celui de l’église de l’abbaye de Cluny, de la cathédrale de Cambrai ou des façades des châteaux d’Anet et de Gaillon. Soutenu dans son action sous l’Empire (il conseillera notamment l’impératrice Joséphine dans ses travaux d’embellissement à Malmaison), Alexandre Lenoir sera le premier à jouer un rôle de tout premier plan dans la remise au goût du jour de l’art médiéval. Lenoir avait la protection de Joséphine et lui avait composé un « Épître dédicatoire à Sa Majesté l’impératrice et reine » Lenoir fit un tableau du partage des objets d’art et antiquités de la Malmaison lors du décès de l’Impératrice.

Dans son cadre à angles coupés provenant d’une boîte de présent, en or ciselé de rinceaux à fond amati, à décor de rinceaux feuillagés et de quatre étoiles émaillées aux coins. Présentée sous verre amovible dans son emplacement en forme dans un coffret postérieur en feutrine bleue avec cartouche de présentation (Un emplacement pour une miniature de Joséphine par Daniel Saint manquante). 7 x 4,5 cm. Miniature : 6 x 3,5 cm. B.E. Vers 1805 Biographie : Daniel Saint est considéré comme l’un des plus grands miniaturistes français du XIXe siècle. Né à Saint- Lô en 1778. Il fut l’élève de Jean-Baptiste Regnault (École de David) puis d’Augustin et d’Aubry. Il réalisa de nombreux portraits de la famille Bonaparte (impératrice Joséphine, Napoléon Ier, Reine Hortense), des souverains de la Restauration (Prince Eugène) et de la Monarchie de Juillet (Charles X). Il revint à Saint- Lô en 1842 où il mourut en 1847. Le musée des Beaux-Arts de la ville possède quelques exemplaires de ses Œuvres. S’écartant de la méthode d’Isabey qui procédait par le pointillé et de celle d’Augustin qui avait recours au glacis, à l’exemple d’Aubry, il employa les hachures obtenant ainsi des effets de vigueur dans les tons et de relief dans le modèle. Daniel Saint, born in Saint-Lô, is considered one of the most important French miniature painters of the 19th century. He was a student of Jean-Baptiste Regnault and Augustin and Aubry. Between 1804 and 1831 he exhibited regularly at the Salon of Painting and Sculpture. Saint portrayed numerous prominent personalities, including the Bonaparte family, Prince Eugene and members of the July Monarchy. Daniel Saint, geboren in Saint-Lô, gilt als einer der bedeutendsten französischen Miniaturmaler des 19. Jahrhunderts. Er war Schüler von Jean-Baptiste Regnault und Augustin und Aubry. Zwischen 1804 und 1831 stellte er regelmässig im Salon für Malerei und Bildhauerei aus. Miniature ovale peinte sur ivoire, signée à gauche Saint., le représentant en buste, légèrement de trois-quarts gauche, en uniforme prussien, portant la croix de l’ordre de l’Aigle rouge et la plaque de l’ordre de l’Aigle noir (Prusse), sur fond brun. Fente et petits manques. Conservée dans son cadre d’origine en or 750 millièmes émaillé. Inscription manuscrite au dos : Joseph Bonaparte d’Espagne (sic). Poids brut : 26.30 g. Provenance : - Collection Théodore Dablin (1781-1861). - Puis leg à sa filleule, Amélie Levaigneur (1824-1912). - Sa vente les 2-3-4 mai 1912, hôtel Drouot, lot 251. - Vraisemblablement rachetée par la famille au cours de cette vente car conservée depuis dans sa descendance (étiquettes d’inventaire n°217 et 983). Référence : un second exemplaire de cette miniature également signé et conservé dans le même cadre se trouve dans la Royal Collection Trust au château de Windsor, donné par la duchesse de Gloucester à la reine Victoria en 1857 (inv. RCIN 420597). Historique : Devenu en 1826 le premier duc de Saxe-Cobourg et Gotha, Ernest est notamment le père d’Albert (1819-1861), époux de la reine Victoria et prince consort du Royaume-Uni. Il est l’un des ascendants de la reine Élisabeth II du Royaume-Uni et du roi Philippe de Belgique.

A very fine and rare gold enamel snuff box with miniature portrait of Napoleon Bonaparte Case: 18K gold, master's mark "ELB" (Joseph-Etienne Blerzy, Paris), French gold guarantee mark 1798-1809, Parisian second standard mark for gold 1795-1797. Oval box, sablé ground, the lid, the sides and the base engine-turned with concentric circles, the borders and pilasters with raised flowerheads, framed by a narrow blue enamel border. The cover centred by a glazed oval miniature on bone depicting Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821) facing right, wearing a green artillery uniform with golden epaulettes, blue sash and the breast-star and badge of the Imperial French Order of the Legion of Honour. Scratched signature on the right side. Cond.: Case: very good, slightly worn.

Il fut l'élève de Jean-Baptiste Regnault (École de David) puis d'Augustin et d'Aubry. Il réalisa de nombreux portraits de la famille Bonaparte (impératrice Joséphine, Napoléon Ier,Reine Hortense), des souverains de la Restauration (Prince Eugène) et de la monarchie de Juillet (Charles X). Il revint à Saint-Lô en 1842 où il mourut en 1847. Le musée des Beaux-Arts de la ville possède quelques exemplaires de ses aeuvres. S'écartant de la méthode d'Isabey qui procédait par le pointillé et de celle d'Augustin qui avait recours au glacis, à l'exemple d'Aubry, il employa les hachures obtenant ainsi des effets de vigueur dans les tons et de relief dans le modèle.
