Notes

There are two known versions of the present lot. One, sold as part of the Collection of the Marquis de Ségur, Château de Méry-sur-Oise, part II; Hotel Drouot, Paris, 17 April 1975, identifies the sitter. Another version was sold by Leo Schidlof's Kunstauktionhaus, Vienna, 7-12 February 1921, lot 538. This was praised by Schidlof as 'very good' (see Leo Schidlof, The Miniature in Europe, 1964, II, p.712.) This miniature, which shows very slight variance in the background from the present lot, was sold at Christie's, 6 November 2001, lot 207.
