Franz Roubal (1889-1967), 'Wild Turkeys', around 1930

      Est: €1,120 - €1,400

Oil on hardboard Austria, around 1930 Franz Roubal (1889-1967) - Austrian landscape, animal painter and sculptor Artist's estate stamp on verso Overall dimensions, framed: 92.5 x 71.5 cm; hardboard: 60 x 80 cm Good condition Provenance: Austrian private collection The Austrian artist Franz Roubal is primarily known for his animal depictions; similar paintings fetch up over 17,000 euros at international auctions The Austrian Franz Roubal (1889-1967) worked as a commissioned artist for the Natural History Museum in Mainz in the first half of the 20th century. This has influenced him inasmuch as he created countless animal depictions in his paintings and sculptures. He was also inspired by major animal painters, such as Friedrich Wilhelm Kuhnert, Richard Friese and Carl Fahringer, however, came to his individual style. In this oil painting with a group of turkeys, Franz Roubal has not aimed for a mimetic reproduction of the birds, but set the focus on the expression of colours. Just as he has abstracted the background in greenish-blue colours, so vaguely appear the birds with their bluish heads and iridescent feathers. On the back of the painting is the artist's estate stamp. The painting is in good condition with slight signs of age and wear. The colour surface shows a slight crackle and traces of the mounting on the edges. The black wood frame with golden trim is damaged in places. The overall dimensions, including the frame, are 92.5 x 71.5 cm; the hardboard measures 60 x 80 cm. Franz Roubal (1889-1967) A native of Vienna, Franz Roubal studied at the Academy of Fine Arts under Christian Griepenkerl and at the Master School of Rudolf Bacher. He worked as a landscape, animal painter and sculptor. As a sculptor, he created especially reconstructions of prehistoric animals. He also made illustrations for zoological books.
