Oil on canvas, 11 x 16 inches, signed and dated 1874 lower left. In a period gilt frame, 16 x 21.5 inches. Some losses to frame, painting with minor losses around edges, otherwise in good, untouched condition.

Ropes, 1863", 33.5" x 53.5", framed 39" x 59". Condition: Light craquelure, scattered inpaint, two approx. 3" tears at center, relined, sold with all faults.

Joseph Ropes (American, 1812-1885). Titled by R.H. Love Galleries, "The Old Solider Relates His Efforts".  Oil on canvas, signed and dated 1849 on the stretcher. A fine example of 19th century American genre, ostensibly depicting a Revolutionary War Soldier. Sight size: 19" ht. x 22.75" wd.

Joseph A Ropes, 1812-1885, Mass/New York, oil on canvas painting of Mt. Monadnock from the east side probably viewed from the South Pack Monadnock Area with Peterborough in the distance, signed lower left "J. Ropes Painter, Salem, Mass, 1868 and noted on reverse.

Joseph C. Ropes (American, 1812-1885)

DESCRIPTION: Joseph C. Ropes (American, 1812-1885). Circa 1872. Oil on canvas. Signed and dated, lower right. In an ornate gold leaf frame. Ropes was born in Massachusetts to a prominent family and did not delve into art until his mid thirties where he studied at the National Academy of Design and with the artist John R. Smith. Throughout his life he also taught art and traveled abroad for eleven years in the late 1800's. MEASUREMENTS: 22-1/4" x 30". Overall with frame 32" x 39-3/4". CONDITION: Upper and middle center with restoration, repaired tears (two patches visible verso) and inpainting. Some cracquelure and discoloration, consist with age.

Joseph Ropes (American, 1812-1885), "A Figure with a Dog", c.1844; oil/canvas, 30" x 25", signed

and titled on stretcher. Ropes was born in Salem, MA. He studied at the National Academy of Design. He traveled to Italy from 1865-1876. Ropes exhibited in the Centennial Expo in Philadelphia in 1876, upon his return, and then maintained a studio in Germantown for 10 years. He died in New York City.
