Thence by descent to the present owner. Jacob Roos, called 'Rosa di Napoli' was born in Rome in March 1682, son of Philipp Peter Roos who was known as 'Rosa da Tivoli'. He was born in Frankfurt, Germany and enjoyed a successful career as painter of animals and landscapes. Jacob in turn adopted the style of his father. Unsurprisingly he lived and worked in Naples and Benezit observes that it is difficult to distinguish the son's work from his father's. Seven large Italian landscapes are attributed to him and are to be found at the Résidence de Wurzburg. These two paintings were purchased by Benjamin Lee Guinness, grandson of the founder of the eponymous brewery for his home at St. Anne's in Clontarf, Dublin. The attribution has been made by Dr Hermann Jedding author of the monograph on the Roos family.

Jacob Roos called Rosa da Napoli (Rome, 1682-Naples 1730), alleged artist. Landscape with shepherds. 75x130, oil on canvas. Small hole in the canvas and chipping in the paint. Ancient collection of Notary Cav. Fazio. The surface of the painting is affected by the presence of a layer of oxidized and yellowed paint. "First-born of the well-known Philip Peter Roos, known as Rosa da Tivoli, he was trained following his father's teachings and the aestetics popular in Rome and Naples at the time. He developed his painting depicting men and animals in an Arcadian climate, then developing the landscape and rural themes and ways handed down to him by grandfather Henric and his father. But he distinguishes himself from them in that he is less emphatic and lingers more towards a narrative taste, made elegant in a serene and almost familiar atmosphere. The chiaroscuro effects are also modulated with well balanced chromatic drafts. " STUDIO ASOR

Oil painting on canvas, Jakopo Roos, known as "Rosa da Napoli" (Rome 1682, Naples 1730). A postal station, 58x96, framed 74x112. Signed and dated 1720 Signed on the lower right. On "Ministerio de educated and Culture, National Museum of Arts, Rio de Janeiro."Firstborn of the known Philipp Peter Roos, called "Rose of Tivoli", is formed following a style then in vogue in Rome. Like his contemporaries, such as Domenico Brandi (1684-1736). The artist was born in a family of painters, and quickly develops his painting skills depicting men and animals in an Arcadian climate, developing ideas about the way rural landscapes are dipicted, handed down from his father. The painting in question is one of the few that comes to us signed and dated, in a catalog of somewhat fragmentary works. For this reason, it is an important document as the witness to an elegant taste for the narrative in a serene atmosphere is almost familiar, it modulates the chiaroscuro effects with well balanced color drafts."STUDIO ASOR
