Original vintage advertising poster for London Transport designed by the costume and set designer, Osborne Robinson (1904-1976), who created works for the likes of Laurence Olivier, Michael Redgrave and Alec Guinness. Robinson maintained a personal collection of over 3,500 posters from around the turn of the century. Among them is one of his own works, which features string puppets of a clown, harlequin and female masked dancer with a sign: London Transport offers this poster as a diversion and a greeting. These three figures, cut out and made up, will provide puppets or hanging decorations. Cost 10/- each from the Poster Shop, 280 Marylebone Road, NW1 (near Edgware Road circle line station on the London Underground), including a leaflet giving simple instructions. Writing at the bottom: 1164/3315M/3500. Printed by The Baynard Press. Good condition, creasing, tears. Country of issue: UK, designer: Osborne Robinson, size (cm): 101x63.5, year of printing: 1964.

ROBINSON, Thomas Osborne (1904-1976). London Transport / [Puppet]. [London]: The Baynard Press, ca. 1960s. Color offset poster with puppet figures which could be cut up and made into puppets for hanging and decoration. Unlike most of its posters, and because it was designed to be cut up, London Transport advertised these posters for sale as souvenirs. This is one of the souvenir copies, having a bold title at the bottom designating it “a reproduction of a poster designed for London Transport,” although it is a vintage printing. 40 x 24 7/8”. Unbacked. Minor creases in margins. A-.

Original vintage advertising poster issued by the London Underground featuring three figures to be cut out and assembled as puppets or decorations. Designed by Osborne Robinson (1904-1976). The puppets are circus characters dressed in brightly coloured harlequinade outfits (a harlequin, a columbine and a clown) – the background is yellow and the puppets pieces are framed by a red theatre curtain, with text underneath the image explaining where to buy copies of the poster. MARRIAGE A LA MODE 41 by 31cm.; 16¼ by 12¼in. signed u.l.: Osborne Robinson and titled u.r. watercolour and gouache over pencil NOTE As a teenager Osborne Robinson Osborne attended a performance of Diaghilev's Russian Ballet and was so inspired by Bakst's stage decoration and costumes that he pursued a career in theatre design. In 1927, having attended classes at Northampton School of Art, he was first invited to produce designs for the theatre in his native town of Northampton, where he was later to become chief scenic designer, in addition to working on productions elsewhere in Britain such as at the Old Vic and Stratford. During his long career, Osborne developed a keen interest in 19υth and 20υth century posters, amassing a sizeable and important collection which is now owned by the School of Art and Design at University College, Northampton. The present picture is a charming costume sketch for Marriage a la Mode by John Dryden which is often praised as his best comedic endeavor, exploring the treatment of sex and marriage.
