ROBINSON, HENRY PEACH (1830-1901) The Valentine * Who Could Have Sent It?

      Est: $9,000 - $12,000

ROBINSON, HENRY PEACH (1830-1901) The Valentine * Who Could Have Sent It? Pair of large-format albumen prints mounted on card, images 21 1/2 x 16 1/4 inches (55 x 41 cm). The two prints with superb tones, in what appear to be the original frames. In 1885, Henry Peach Robinson showed four photographs at the annual exhibition of the Photographic Society of Great Britain. He had shown since 1852, and in the process had become one of the leading authorities in British photography. The present two prints were acquired directly from the exhibition and remained in the same family collection until 1989. The reviewer in the British Journal of Photography wrote of these two images "...a pair of single figure studies which combine in an unusual degree the elements which go to make a photograph a picture." Kraus Jr.; Christie's South Kensington Sale 7650, lot 74, 30 April 1997 Exhibited: Photographic Society of Great Britain, 1885; The Chrysler Museum (with their labels), "Pictorial Effects Naturalistic Vision."
