Description

* Robinson (Henry Peach, 1830-1901). 'Wayside Gossip', 1882, from the Gwysaney, North Wales, (part of the 'Figures in Landscape' series), composite albumen print, laid on board and window mounted with pencil title and photographer's signature to lower mount, small closed tear to foot of image, mount browned, brittle and frayed, image 26 x 36cm, together with a pipe believed to have belonged to Robinson (see his self-portrait of 1856 illustrated in Harker, Henry Peach Robinson, Master of Photographic Art, 1830-1901 (1988), p. 2) This photograph won a gold medal from the Photographic Society for the best outdoor portrait in 1882. A copy of the book by Margaret Harker and paperwork from the vendor explaining how she believes the photograph and pipe came into her great grandfather's possession is included with the lot. (5)
