      A PAIR OF GEORGE III SILVER SAUCEBOATS, THOMAS ROBINS, LONDON, 1806

      weight 1617gr, 52oz measurements 24cm, 9 1/2in wide oval, armorial-engraved with leaf capped handles on assymetrical scroll supports, shaped gadrooned rims NOTE The arms are those of Blantyre of co. Lanark, most probably for Robert Walter Stuart (Stewart) XI Baron of Blantyre (1777-1830) who married in 1813 Fanny Mary Rodney (grand daughter of the famous Lord Rodney). He was representative peer for the Kingdom of Scotland in 1806-07 the period during which these sauceboats were hallmarked. His family seat was Lennoxlove in East Lothian which had been built with money given by Frances Stewart (Stuart) Duchess of Richmond generally thought to have been the model for Britannia on the British coinage of the late 17th century, see lot 69. An identical pair of sauceboats, Thomas Robins, London, 1811 with the crest of Heathcote were sold Christies, 6 March 1991, lot 108

His work is rare and until the discovery and sale of the albums from the Bath and West and Southern Counties Society at Sotheby's in 1967 and 1968 (of which the present watercolour and the following lot were a part) his work had been known only by an album of flower sketches and five finished drawings in the collection of Lord Fairhaven, now part of the Broughton Collection in the Fitzwilliam Museum Cambridge
