One of a pair; see Lot 204 for the mate. 35" H X 54" W X 21.75" D. Age cracks, minor wear to back edge of marble, repair to one back corner of marble.

Louis XVI Style Commode After Jean-Henri Riesener

DESCRIPTION: A Louis XVI style commode after the original executed in 1778 by Jean-Henri Riesener (1734-1806) for Louis XVI for use at the Chateau de Fontainebleu and later the Chateau de Versailles. Heavy variegated marble top, possibly Breche, over three ormolu mounted frieze drawers above two parquetry panels flanking a central nature morte marquetry panel of various woods portraying a ewer and fruit basket and opening to a shelved interior. Ormolu skirt and feet. Late 19th/early 20th century. Jean-Henri Riesener was born in Gladbeck, Germany in 1734 and moved to Paris where he apprenticed with Jean-Francois Oeben around 1754. In 1774, he became "ébéniste ordinaire du roi", the greatest Parisian cabinetmaker of the Louis XVI period. The original commode was acquired by Alexander Douglas-Hamilton in the early 19th century and later by Barons Nathaniel and Albert von Rothschild. It is now housed in the Chateau de Fontainebleu's permanent collection. MEASUREMENTS: 37" x 63-1/2" x 23-3/4". CONDITION: Some veneer losses and lifting of inlay.

Fine Louis XVI ormolu mounted mahogany vide poche circa 1775, attributed to jean-henri riesener The rectangular top with hinged flap raised on columnar stiles continuing to fluted legs, raised on round tapered capped feet joined by an entwined shaped stretcher; the whole outlined with ormolu. NOTE: Jean-Henri Riesener (1734-1806) became one of the most celebrated ebenistes of late eighteenth century Paris. A poor German immigrant, he moved to Paris and apprenticed with Jean-François Oeben (1721-1763). Soon after Oebens death Riesener married his widow and was received as master ébéniste in January 1768. A comparable vide poche also know as a Table à ouvrage or tricoteuse by Riesener was reputedly made for Marie Antoinette. This model now in the Musée du Louvre, see F. J. B. Watson, Louis XVI Furniture, London, 1793, fig. 134. H: 29 1/4 in, W: 21 5/8 in, D: 11 3/4 in.
