Description

DESCRIPTION: A Louis XVI style commode after the original executed in 1778 by Jean-Henri Riesener (1734-1806) for Louis XVI for use at the Chateau de Fontainebleu and later the Chateau de Versailles. Heavy variegated marble top, possibly Breche, over three ormolu mounted frieze drawers above two parquetry panels flanking a central nature morte marquetry panel of various woods portraying a ewer and fruit basket and opening to a shelved interior. Ormolu skirt and feet. Late 19th/early 20th century. Jean-Henri Riesener was born in Gladbeck, Germany in 1734 and moved to Paris where he apprenticed with Jean-Francois Oeben around 1754. In 1774, he became "ébéniste ordinaire du roi", the greatest Parisian cabinetmaker of the Louis XVI period. The original commode was acquired by Alexander Douglas-Hamilton in the early 19th century and later by Barons Nathaniel and Albert von Rothschild. It is now housed in the Chateau de Fontainebleu's permanent collection. MEASUREMENTS: 37" x 63-1/2" x 23-3/4". CONDITION: Some veneer losses and lifting of inlay.
