      Henry Ries (1917-2004) American, Photograph "The Sentinel" and signed in the lower right. Ries was a photographer who worked for the New York times. In 1955, he opened his own studio in Manhattan. During his time with the Times, he met and photographed the famous and the infamous, such as artists Pablo Picasso and Pablo Casals, as well as Spanish General Francisco Franco. In 2003 he was awarded Germany's Officer Cross of the Order of Merit, the highest award for citizens of other countries. Overall size: 12 3/4 x 15 1/2 in. Sight size: 10 1/2 x 13 in.

      Ries, Henry 1917 Berlin - 2004 New York "Aboard 'Bremen' shortly before arrival in 'The Promised Land'". January 1938. Later gelatin silver print. Mat. 18,2 x 24,3cm (18,5 x 25,2cm). Verso denoted with the photographer's copyright stamp as well as titled, dated in pencil and inscribed in black ink "Vintage Print". The sheet corners very softy bumped. The inscription on verso very softly pressed through to recto. A crease in the left image center.

      HENRY RIES (1917-2004) IT'S SMART TO KEEP UP WITH THE TIMES. 1956. 43 1/2x59 3/4 inches, 110 1/2x152 cm. Condition B+: vertical and horizontal folds. Paper. Ries emigrated to America before the Second World War and after a stint in the army became a photojournalist in Europe, working for The New York Times. He is best known for his pictures from ravaged post-war Germany and the Berlin Airlift. In 1955 he turned his talent towards commercial photography and opened his own studio. For his former employer he produces a sharp and precise domestic scene infused with mid-century Madison Avenue panache.

The first signed in pencil below the image in the margin, the second signed, dated and annotated in pencil on the verso and both with photographer's copyright stamp on the verso. The second image is an important photo in Henry Ries' oeuvre. His career as a photographer started with this small image of the Brandenburg Gate in 1937. On the verso he noted: MEIN ALLERERSTES PHOTO (My first photograph). - Apart from a small emulsion loss in upper left corner (second photograph), both in very good condition. Lit.: Henry Ries.
