ROBERT DENNIS REID (1924 - 2000) Untitled. Oil, canvas collage and pencil on linen canvas, 1970. 940x864 mm; 37x34 inches. Signed and dated in pencil, verso. From his X-O Games series. Provenance: the estate of the artist; private collection, Philadelphia. Born in Atlanta, Georgia, Robert Reid was an accomplished painter, illustrator and art educator. He studied at Clark College, Atlanta, Parsons School of Design, New York, and the Art Institute of Chicago from 1941-1950. Reid worked as a fashion illustrator and taught fashion illustration, drawing and design at the Rhode Island School of Design. His first one-man show was held at Grand Central Moderns, New York in 1965. His exhibitions include the 1st World Festival of Negro Artists, Dakar, Senegal, 1965, the important exhibition Negro in American Art, UCLA Art Galleries, 1966, Arts in the American Embassies State Department Program, 1967, Minneapolis Institute of Arts, the Studio Museum in Harlem, 1968-69, and the Whitney Museum of American Art, 1971. Reid was represented by Alonzo Gallery in the 1970s and exhibited at June Kelly Gallery in the 1990s. His work is in the collections of the Museum of African Art in Washington, DC, the University of Notre Dame, Cornell University, Newark Museum, Syracuse University, University of Pennsylvania and Drew University.

Provenance: private collection, Pennsylvania. Towards Honfleur is an abstract study by Robert Reid inspired by the landscape around Honfleur, France. Located in Normandy, Honfleur is lined with 16th- to 18th-century townhouses, and has long been a subject for artists, including Claude Monet. Born in Atlanta, Georgia, Robert Reid was both a painter and an art educator. He was a painting instructor at the Summit Art Center in New Jersey and a Professor of Drawing at the Rhode Island School of Design in the early 1970s. He studied at Clark College, Atlanta, the Parsons School of Design, New York, and the Art Institute of Chicago from 1941-1950. His exhibitions include the 1st World Festival of Negro Artists, Dakar, Senegal, 1965, the important Negro in American Art exhibition, UCLA Art Galleries, 1966, Arts in the American Embassies State Department Program, 1967, Minneapolis Institute of Arts, the Studio Museum in Harlem, 1968-69, and the Whitney Museum of American Art, 1971.
