Reaugh." 8 3/8" x 16 1/2" Note: Inspired by many artists, the present Frank Reaugh pastel is a good example of the artist's early work and the influence of Dutch Realist Anton Mauve (1838-1888). Frank Reaugh spent defining early years studying in Europe from approximately 1884-1889 before moving to Texas. The present work is an important predecessor to his later much beloved Texas works.

Lot accompanied by letter by Michael R. Grauer, Associate Director for Curatorial Affairs/Curator of Art, Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum, Canyon, Texas Mr. Reaugh began painting Texas longhorns-or Texas cattle as he called them-not long after his family emigrated to Texas from Illinois in 1876. By the early 1880s, Texas cattlemen such as Charles Goodnight on the J A Ranch began crossbreeding longhorns with European cattle, especially British Durhams and Herefords. Eventually ranches from Texas to Montana began raising herds of European cattle.

Lot accompanied by letter by Michael R. Grauer, Associate Director for Curatorial Affairs/Curator of Art, Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum, Canyon, Texas "[I] don't think there were ever any chances to draw whole [Texas] steers... It was always bits of detail, that I could get, an eye or an ear, a knee or a shoulder joint, the characteristic spotting, the way the hair grew, and sometimes even a head; but never in all my years of study did I get a chance to make a good sketch from life of one whole Texas steer." Frank Reaugh, Paintings of the Southwest, 1936. Mr. Reaugh built a visual "library" of studies of parts of longhorns to aid him in his paintings of Texas cattle. These studies are sometimes noted to particular paintings and occasionally dated and are the very foundation of Mr. Reaugh's work.

FRANK REAUGH (American, 1860-1945) Steer at Pasture Pastel on grit paper 4 x 7 inches (10.2 x 17.8 cm) Signed lower right: F. Reaugh Born in 1860, Frank Reaugh was an artist who devoted a great amount of his considerable artistic skills to impressionistic depictions of West Texas and its legendary longhorns. These three works, like most of Reaugh's pastels, are consistently small in size. Therefore, they are well adapted to transport and use in open country, allowing him to travel the vast expanses of the state easily and to work in the outdoors with relatively little fuss. He has been called the "Dean of Texas Artists" because in the 1890s, the first of many art students began accompanying him on the frequent sketching trips he made to West Texas. His pastel landscapes are considered some of the most poetic depictions of Texas ever produced. In the watershed of the Salt and Double Mountain Forks of the Brazos, Reaugh found a harsh but sublime landscape. The lack of vegetation--save the mesquite trees and the top of the juniper just visible at right--and the red-orange color of the soil are indicative of this region. A favorite Reaugh motif was a lone steer plodding up a hill away from the viewer, as seen in Steer at Pasture. "Pastures" in this part of West Texas are only pastures in the larger sense as the natural topography often makes building fences--and herding cattle--all but impossible except for the savviest of cowboys.

FRANK REAUGH (American, 1860-1945) Steers with Mesa Pastel on grit paper 4 x 7 inches (10.2 x 17.8 cm) Signed lower right: F. Reaugh Reaugh painted frequently in the breaks of the Wichita River drainage in the early 1890s and into the 1920s. Paintings of the "Wichita Breaks" usually tend toward a lavender palette with a splash of an almost turquoise color to indicate water. Moreover, Reaugh's paintings from this part of Texas frequently have more cattle in them than in other, more desolate parts of the Southwest where fewer Texas cattle per acre were grazed.

Reaugh An excellent example of Reaugh's work, circa 1900-20, this pastel was likely painted in the canyonlands of West Texas, based on the mesquite trees in the foreground and the geological striations in the butte in the background. The steer standing in the meager shade of the mesquites is a cipher for Reaugh's views of the arid Southwest.

FRANK REAUGH (American, 1860-1945) Steer with Mesa Pastel on paper 4-1/2 x 7-3/4 inches (11.4 x 19.7 cm) Signed lower right: F. Reaugh Born in 1860, Frank Reaugh was an artist who devoted a great deal of his considerable artistic skills to impressionistic depictions of West Texas and its legendary longhorns. Steer with Mesa and Country Road, like most of Reaugh's pastels, are consistently small in size. Pastels are beautiful when blended by a master to create the atmospheric effects, vivid colors, and ever changing light of West Texas, capturing the dramatic far-off horizons and spectacular skies found in the region.

The longest river in Texas at about 1,300 miles, the Brazos proper forms at the confluence of the Double Mountain and Salt forks near the Caprock escarpment east of Lubbock, but its source is in eastern New Mexico. Reaugh especially treasured the landforms around Double Mountain, a pair of buttes southwest of Aspermont in Stonewall County, as seen in this example from 1909.

FRANK REAUGH (American, 1860-1945) Horizon Landscape at Sunset Pastel on paper 3 x 7 inches (7.6 x 17.8 cm) window Frank Reaugh was an artist who devoted the vast majority of his considerable artistic skills to depictions of West Texas and its legendary longhorns. He has been called "Dean of Texas Artists" because of the many art students who accompanied him on the frequent sketching trips he made to West Texas throughout his lifetime. His pastel landscapes and cloud studies remain some of the most poetic depictions of Texas's Great Plains ever produced. Reaugh's mastering of the pastel medium, well adapted to transport and use in open country, allowed him to easily travel the vast expanses of the state and to work in the outdoors with relatively little fuss. Pastels are beautiful when blended by a master to create the atmospheric effects, vivid colors, and ever changing light of West Texas, to capture the dramatic far-off horizons and spectacular skies found in the region. Most of Reaugh's pastels are consistently small in size. Although this is largely due to the necessities of plein-air painting, most examples of his work are even smaller than practicality demanded. However, it is possible that he purposely encouraged the tension between his seemingly boundless subject, the West Texas plains, and the miniature size of the artworks he produced to highlight their inherent conflict. In other words, the artist might have made these pastels so intimate, requiring close study by the viewer, as a contrast to the true experience of such overwhelmingly large vistas. In this manner, he reveals the inability of any traditional artistic medium to do this landscape justice while simultaneously capturing its essence in a lyrical and moving manner.
