Description

FRANK REAUGH (American, 1860-1945) Untitled [Landscape Near Double Mountain], 1909 Pastel on paper 3-1/2 x 7 inches (8.9 x 17.8 cm) Signed and dated lower right: F. Reaugh/09 PROVENANCE: Frank Reaugh Estate. Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum, Canyon, Texas. This lot is accompanied by a letter from Michael R. Grauer, Associate Director for Curatorial Affairs/Curator of Art, Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum. The longest river in Texas at about 1,300 miles, the Brazos proper forms at the confluence of the Double Mountain and Salt forks near the Caprock escarpment east of Lubbock, but its source is in eastern New Mexico. Reaugh especially treasured the landforms around Double Mountain, a pair of buttes southwest of Aspermont in Stonewall County, as seen in this example from 1909.
