Property of a Gentleman Martin Ferdinand Quadal (1736 - 1808) Three leopards in a landscape Oil on canvas Provenance: Private collection, France Lot Essay: Martin Ferdinand Quadal was born in Niemtschitz in Moravia and travelled across Europe throughout his career. He studied at the Academie der Bildenden in Vienna and subsequently in Paris in 1767, where he gained employment with Louis-Joseph, Prince de Condé, specialising as a painter of horses. During the 1770s his travels took him further afield and records show him working in England and Ireland and exhibiting his portraits and hunting scenes at the Royal Academy. Quadal exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1772-3, 1791, and finally in 1793. Whilst in London in 1793, he also published his own prints of 'A Variety of Tame and Wild Animals', which he made as guides for young artists in use of their own paintings and drawings. His 1779 journey to Dublin was also a success, and the Dublin Society purchased a number of his animal studies for use as study aids for students. In 1784 he travelled to Italy, stopping in Rome and Naples, amongst other cities. He appears to have visited Vienna again in 1787 and he is recorded in the Netherlands in 1794 and Hamburg in 1796. Martin Ferdinand Quadal (1736-1808) Portrait of Mr

        Est: £6,000 - £8,000

Martin Ferdinand Quadal (1736-1808) Portrait of Mr Henry Clemetshaw, organist of Wakefield Parish Church, (now Wakefield Cathedral) Oil on canvas, Signed and dated 1777 lower right 76 x 68.5cm (30 x 27in) Martin Ferdinand Quadal was a peripatetic artist who is today best known for his depictions of animals. He was in London in the early 1770s, exhibiting at the Royal Academy, and visited Yorkshire between 1777 and 1779, when he would have made the painting of Clemetshaw. He worked and travelled throughout Europe and by the mid-1790s was en route to Russia, where he settled and taught at the Academy. The Rev J L Sisson in his 'Historic Sketch of the Parish Church of Wakefield 1824' refers to Henry Clemetshaw's musical ability and reputation.Henry Clemetshaw was an extremely able and highly respected organist in the district of Wakefield from 1771 until his death at the age of 68 in May 1821. Born in 1753, Henry Clemetshaw would have been 24 years old when Martin Quadal painted this work during the two year period that he was painting in Yorkshire. Clemetshaw was tragically struck blind when he was 4 years of age and it is interesting and clever how the artist has depicted the sitter in a pose that would have required his eyes to be closed naturally and therefore add elegance to the portrait.
