    JOHN QUINTON PRINGLE (SCOTTISH 1864-1925) SUNSET OVER WOODLAND Oil on canvas 15cm x 20cm (6in x 8in) Sir Harry Jefferson Barnes and thence by descent until acquired by the present owner Sir Harry Jefferson Barnes was the Director of the Glasgow School of Art between 1964 and 1980. He grew up in Sheffield and went on to study at the Slade School of Fine Art under Randolph Schwabe. Barnes became Assistant Master in Painting and Drawing at the Glasgow School of Art in 1944. He was appointed Director in 1964 and set up the Mackintosh School of Architecture in 1965.

    JOHN QUINTON PRINGLE (1864-1925) BOATS NAMED SWALLOW, LARGO Signed, inscribed and dated 30/8/90 on the reverse, watercolour 10.5cm(4.25in)18.5cm(7.25in) Estimate £ 3,000-5,000 Note:Another watercolour of Largo dated 1890 was exhibited in the 1981 Scottish Arts Council Exhibition of Pringle's work held in Charlotte Square.John Quinton Pringle was an optician by training and continued to practice throughout his working life.From 1885 however he enroled at the Glasgow School of Art where he studied under Fra Newbery.In 1891 he won a Gold Medal for Life Drawing in a National Competition held at South Kensington. He exhibited at the Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts from 1896 and subsequently at the XV Secessionist Exhibition in Vienna in 1902. A retrospective exhibition at Glasgow School of Art in 1922 created widespread interest and favourable comment in the Press.
