    Attributed to Henry Cheever(s) Pratt (American, 1803-1880) Portrait of Deacon Thomas Miller of Charlestown, Massachusetts. Inscribed "Painted by Henry C. Pratt" on the reverse, sitter identified in inscriptions on backing paper. Oil on card, 9 1/8 x 6 3/4 in., c. 1825, in a later molded giltwood frame. Condition: Very good. Provenance: Through the family of the sitter. Note: According to inscriptions on the reverse dated 1873 and written by his daughter Elizabeth Devens Balfour, Thomas Miller (1747-1832) was "deacon of the First Parish Church in Charlestown 45 years, a man eminently distinguished by his Christian character...whose time for the last 15 years of his life and more was chiefly devoted to visiting the poor and afflicted..."

    Pratt, dated Boston 1855 and inscribed with title on the reverse - - oil on canvas24 x 40 in. (61.2 x 101.6 cm.)Henry C. Pratt was discovered as an artistic talent by Samuel F. B. Morse circa 1817. Both artists travelled and worked together in Boston, Washington, D.C., and Charleston. Often the itinerant, Pratt went on an expedition to Maine with Thomas Cole in 1845 and from 1851-1853, he explored the Mexican border with John Russell Bartlett.
