Attributed to Henry Cheever(s) Pratt (American, 1803-1880)

Portrait of Deacon Thomas Miller of Charlestown, Massachusetts. Inscribed "Painted by Henry C. Pratt" on the reverse, sitter identified in inscriptions on backing paper. Oil on card, 9 1/8 x 6 3/4 in., c. 1825, in a later molded giltwood frame. Condition: Very good.

Provenance: Through the family of the sitter.

Note: According to inscriptions on the reverse dated 1873 and written by his daughter Elizabeth Devens Balfour, Thomas Miller (1747-1832) was "deacon of the First Parish Church in Charlestown 45 years, a man eminently distinguished by his Christian character...whose time for the last 15 years of his life and more was chiefly devoted to visiting the poor and afflicted..."
