Bass Otis, Portrait of Adrianna Haynes Physick, USA, um 1840

    Est: €1,120 - €1,400

Oil on canvas USA, around 1840 Bass Otis (1784-1861) – American portraitist and inventor Handwritten label with extensive genealogical label on the verso Charming portrait b Overall dimensions, framed: 96.5 x 84 cm Good condition The present portrait is a charming example of the impressive artistic output by Bass Otis, who was one of the most sought after portraitists of the early United States. His mastery of portraiture was acknowledged by famous personalities, such as Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826), James Fenimore Cooper (1789-1851) or Charles Frémont (1813-1890). The majority of his extensive oeuvre documents however the prominent doctors, merchants, layers and artists of the middle-class of the time, to which he also belonged since he had established his own studio in Philadelphia in 1812. The portrait offered here depicts an elderly lady wearing a fine cap with a ribbon. It is Adrianna Haynes Physick, who was the wife of Henry Physick, a plantation owner from Maryland. The painting sets a clear focus on the realistic depiction of the sitter’s face which appears impressively touching through the light effects in the eyes. The painting is in good condition considering its age. The stretcher is verso fitted with a handwritten label bearing an extensive genealogical documentation about the sitter. There are light marks, where the frame has rubbed. Inspection under UV light reveals small areas of retouching, especially to the edges. The wooden frame shows clear traces of age and use. The framed work measures 96.5 x 84 cm and the size of the stretcher is 76.5 x 64.5 cm. (cbo) Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.
