    ORD, EDWARD O. C.

    Est: $600 - $800

    155. EDWARD O. C. ORD (1818 - 1883) Union major general who led a Corps during the Vicksburg and Appomattox campaigns. He was also severely wounded in the assault at Corinth and at Fort Harrison during the siege of Petersburg. Fine content war-date A.D.S. as major general, 1p. 4to. On "Head Quarters Armies of the United States" letterhead, [n.p.], Mar. 15, 1865 to fellow Gen. George H. Gordon in Norfolk. Sent in "Cypher", the letter reads: "How much water can gun boats take up to Suffolk - and is there no point on the banks of the Nansemond[?] where cavalry could land - covered if necessary by gun boats - would a party, say 500 cavalry, have to carry pontoons to cross the Nottoway - you can come up tonight - if Sumner's cavalry come[s] to Norfolk tomorrow as they are expected to do - leave word where they had better land". Very good, matted with an image of Ord and set into an ornate gilt wood frame. This action was no doubt part of the direct pressure Ord's forces placed on Lee's flank, culminating in the surrender at Appomattox (where Ord was also present). $600 - 800

Edward Otho Cresap, II. An archive of documents, letters, journals and artifacts retained by the son of E.O.C. Ord (1818-1883). Ord, who graduated from West Point and served as a brigadier general in the Civil War, went to California in 1847 with Henry Halleck and William T. Sherman as a surveyor; he produced several maps of the gold region (including the first accurate map produced after the initial strikes). Ord's son (E.O.C. Ord II) played an integral role in the mining history of the West and Southwest by owning numerous mines and through various gold-mining inventions, including an improved mining pan which allowed a prospector to recycle a water supply for mining in dry regions (several original prototypes are included).
