Item Overview

Description

Edward Otho Cresap, II. An archive of documents, letters, journals and artifacts retained by the son of E.O.C. Ord (1818-1883). Ord, who graduated from West Point and served as a brigadier general in the Civil War, went to California in 1847 with Henry Halleck and William T. Sherman as a surveyor; he produced several maps of the gold region (including the first accurate map produced after the initial strikes). Ord's son (E.O.C. Ord II) played an integral role in the mining history of the West and Southwest by owning numerous mines and through various gold-mining inventions, including an improved mining pan which allowed a prospector to recycle a water supply for mining in dry regions (several original prototypes are included). The collection includes: ORD, William M. Autograph manuscript signed, a surveying and prospecting diary, California and Nevada, 1869. 74 pp., 8vo, missing pages from January 13 to March 7 and from March 14 to June 17. A fascinating diary of Ord's travels, probably as a member of a small military survey team, which includes detailed text, several hand-drawn maps and several pencil sketches. Ord discusses various mining operations, encounters with Indians and contact with Mormon settlements: "party took a trip to Montazuma, Patterson Distgood Rock and some Basenot much work done - good prospects"; "Indians & Chief came to camp. Wheeler accused them of stealing. They left mad & threaten fight - about 150 (more or less) Bucks Big Chief among them from St. Thomas"; "started for Vagas.
