FREDERICK BURR OPPER (1857-1937) "Sunday Night Meeting," anarchists and police. 2-panel sequence published in Puck magazine, May 18, 1887. Pen and ink on paper. 8 1/2 x 9 5/8 inches each. Signed "F. Opper" in 2nd panel. Fantastic lot of 2 sequential cartoon panels by pioneering cartoonist and comic strip artist, Frederick Burr Opper. The cartoon features a group of German anarchists in the first panel boldly discussing their plans for the police (to paraphrase from the stereotypically accented dialogue) "When the hour arrives for the great uprising of the people, and the red flag is floating proudly over the capitol in Washington." In the second panel, one of their cohorts bursts into the door an says (in essence), 'Look out! There was a policeman standing on the corner!" at which the group runs for cover. It is very uncommon for complete multi-panel 19th century Opper cartoons to have remained together, and few known examples have been successfully matched to a publication as these have.

OPPER, F[rederick Burr] (1857 – 1937). A Museum of Wonders and What the Young Folks Saw There. London & New York: George Routledge & Sons, 1884. First edition. Publisher’s pictorial paper-covered boards (rear rubbed and scuffed). Lithographed plates depict a range of “museum exhibits” of the era, including a Living Skeleton, magician, silhouette cutter, learned pig, a sea serpent exhibit, and other similar curiosities, each accompanied by somewhat droll verses. Small folio. Binding weak, extremities rubbed, a few short tears in gutters and margins, but good condition overall. Opper’s illustrations were featured in many famous nineteenth century periodicals, including Leslie’s Weekly, and Puck, but his greatest fame came as a newspaper cartoonist. His Happy Hooligan cartoon strip ran for some 32 years in the New York Journal, and made the artist world famous.

Original Hand Colored "Happy Hooligan" Sunday Comic Strip by Frederick Burr Opper (1857-1937). "Happy Hooligan" was a good-hearted hobo whose best intentions always ended up going awry. The comic strip was a staple of the King Features Syndicate from 1900 to 1932, when Opper stopped drawing the comic due to his failing eyesight. The panels have been nicely hand-painted with watercolors as this was a common practice in the early days of comics. The coloring may have been done by Opper himself as a guide to the engravers as the color scheme to use. Piece is signed by Opper in the last panel. Frame measures 30" wide x 22.5" tall. Cartoon 6 panel. Old man in hotel situations, does not like the new electricity. Original art Signed LR. Late 19th century, praobally for Puck magazine. 11 1/2" x 15 1/2".regarded as one of the pioneers of American newspaper comic strips, best known for his comic strip Happy Hooligan. His comic characters were featured in magazine gag cartoons, covers, political cartoons and comic strips for six decades. In 1899, Opper accepted an offer by William Randolph Hearst for a position with the New York Journal. His Happy Hooligan strip first appeared in the New York Journal in 1900, and it ran until 1932. Hooligan was a tramp with a little tin can hat whose gentle simplicity and bumbling good nature made him a success. On Happy's 30th birthday, Opper threw a party attended by President Hoover, former President Coolidge, Charles Schwab, Alfred E. Smith and others. Opper also illustrated books for Edgar Wilson Nye, Mark Twain and Finley Peter Dunne, and published his own books, including Puck's Opper Book (1888), The Folks in Funnyville (1900) and Happy Hooligan Home Again (1907).

Frederick Opper Hand Colored Happy Hooligan Sunday Comic Strip Original Art dated 7-11-09 (King Features Syndicate, 1909). Happy Hooligan was an early pioneering strip in a new art form. It was wildly popular, running from 1900-1932. Happy was a classic Irish-born American tramp. This Sunday page is loaded with Happy, who appears in all 12 panels, along with his special dinner date, Clarice, the famous trained monkey. This partially hand colored Sunday, titled "Happy Hooligan's Greatest Hit," was done to indicate colors of the various elements to the printer, and the episode has an image area of 20.5" x 26". Aside from paper tanning, soiling, and heavy edge and corner wear, the art is in Very Good condition.

AUTOGRAPHS: OPPER FREDERICK BURR: (1857-1937) American Cartoonist, one of the pioneers of American newspaper cartoon strips, creator of Happy Hooligan. An original black pen and ink sketch drawn and signed by Opper on a small oblong 8vo piece. The artist has penned a pair of head and shoulders sketches of the hobo Happy and another character, adding his signature ('F. Opper') and date, 25th March 1922, in his hand at the base. Neatly annotated in ink in another hand at the head and laid down. Together with an A.L.S., F. B. Opper, one page, 8vo, New Rochelle, New York, 9th November 1922, to N. H. Batchelder. Opper thanks his correspondent for his kind letter and asks him to send a blank application form 'so that I may place the name of my grandson on your list of future pupils.' and asks to be informed of the fee.
