Carl Eduard Onken, German 1846-1934- A wooded landscape with a watermill; oil on canvas, signed 'C. Onken' (lower right), 31 x 39 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: The present work exhibits the realism and naturalism which defines Onken's landscapes, and is executed with a sharpness which is particularly striking. He often depicted isolated landscapes occupied only by buildings which, like the watermill in the present work, appear to be in a state of slight disrepair. Onken has, nevertheless, imparted the peaceful scene with a sense of energy and dynamism through his depiction of the waterfall which gushes into the stream below, to the centre of the work.

Karl Onken (1846 Jever - 1934 Wien), North German port with tanker, 20th century, oil on pasteboard Technique: Oil on pasteboard Size: 50 x 40 cm | 19 2/3 x 15 3/4 in Inscription: lower right signed by the artist: "C. Onken" Condition: Good condition. Slightly discolored due to age and soiled on all sides. Fine scratches and small traces of impact are visible in places. Along the edges roughly trimmed with traces of an old framing, partly roughly retouched. Description: Atmospheric scene in a North German harbor. A steamer has docked at the quay, discharging oil through pipes and feed pumps. Playing seagulls and another arriving steamship enliven the left half of the picture, which contrasts with the dark foreground on the right through its open, bright expanse. Onken depicted a cabin in the mountains in his typical realistic manner. The rocky surroundings are rendered in muted shades of brown illustrating the harsh circumstances of life in the mountains. Onken’s oeuvre is defined by rural sceneries with mills as well as coastal scenes and mountainous landscapes, which the artist renders skillfully and with faithful accuracy. Thus his works are also always a tribute to the beauty of nature. The painting is overall in very good condition. The canvas is laminated on firm cardboard, which somewhat bent. The varnish is slightly yellowed with a few, barely noticeable stains on the surface. There is minor rubbing due to framing along the edges. The work is signed ‘C. Onken’ lower left. The frame shows wear. The framed work measures 35 x 43 cm, the trimmed canvas measures 24 x 33,2 cm. Carl Eduard Onken (1846-1934) Carl Eduard Onken, son of a painter, was initially taught by his father. From 1869 to 1879 he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna under Eduard Peithner von Lichtenfels. In the following years, Onken was honored with several awards and scholarships. He traveled to Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands and Germany as well as Switzerland. Carl Eduard Onken was a landscape painter who rendered his themes in a realistic manner. His paintings are held by private collections and galleries in Oldenburg, Prague and Vienna. Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.
