MUSIKALISCHE GESELLSCHAFT Öl auf Holz. 38,8 x 52,8 cm. Links unten auf Kupferkessel unleserliche Restsignatur und Datierung „1637“. In dekorativem Rahmen. In einem beige-braunen Innenraum eine elegant gekleidete Gesellschaft, um einen Tisch mit rotem Tuch versammelt. Auf dem Tisch liegen Notenblätter und ein stehendes Glas. Einer der Männer scheint eine Geige in seinen Händen zu halten, die jedoch teilweise durch den Hut eines Sitzenden verdeckt wird. Sie scheinen sich zum gemeinsamen Singen und Musizieren versammelt zu haben. Besonders auffallend unter ihnen eine auf der linken Tischseite sitzende, blonde Dame in langem dunkelgrünen faltenreichen seidigen Kleid mit großem Spitzenkragen und ein rechts sitzender Herr in schwarz glänzender Kleidung mit passendem Hut und weißem Spitzenkragen, ein kleines Pfeifchen haltend. Einige von ihnen schauen direkt aus dem Bild auf den Betrachter heraus. Am rechten unteren Bildrand ist ein kleiner Hund zu erkennen. Am linken Bildrand arrangiert wohl ein Bediensteter einige Gläser und Getränke an einem Tisch, während seitlich von ihm, am Boden, eine breite Kupferschale mit Getränken steht. Kleine Retuschen. Jan Olis, The Last Drop

Jan Olis was primarily known for his merry company scenes of soldiers smoking and drinking, to which the motif of this work presents a contrast. It shows a man alone in a room, examining the ceramic mug which he has evidently emptied. The figure of the crouching drinker is elegantly framed by the oval composition. Jan Olis was born circa 1610 in the southern Dutch town of Gorinchem (Gorkum), and later worked in Dordrecht, The Hague and Rotterdam. A signed painting indicates that he was also active in Rome in 1631.

NOTE Images of merry companies gathered in comfortable Dutch interiors are one of the most important genres produced in 17th century Netherlands. The present picture is particularly ambiguous. In spite of the elegance of their dress, which might suggest that we are dealing with wealthy burghers' wives, the four women represented in the composition are shown engaged in a variety of inappropriate activities, such as drinking, smoking and gambling. It is difficult to determine whether the man in the doorway is casting a praising or disapproving look on the merry women, but it is certain that their allowing themselves to be witnessed at this moment enhances the faultiness of their behavior. In any event, the presence of the male figure in the doorframe and that of a bed against the back wall on the left indicate that it is likely that this is in fact an elegant brothel, and that the women are courtesans.

NOTES Although the artist, active in Dordrecht, is known to have painted several flower still lifes, some portraits and a few kitchen scenes, he was primarily known for his conversation pieces and kortegaardjes such as the present lot. Characteristic of his mature works are the figures standing in front of a bare wall and the brownish and yellow/ochre tones, reminiscent of works by Willem Duyster, Pieter Codde and Jacob Duck.
