Condition Report

Lined canvas. The surface is pressed due to lining and thin in the sky; the canvas appears to be in fairly good condition, except for some minor scuffs and a few specks of paint loss around the edges. Under ultraviolet light: a large, L-shaped repaired tear of circa 13 by 8 inches on the left arm of Pomona, showing inpainting; further retouches to the outlines of the right figure, a few on Pomona's right arm and face, scattered through the sky. This work is unframed.

Notes

We are grateful to Fred Meijer of the Riksbureau voor Kunsthisorische Documentatie, The Hague, for confirming the present painting to be by Olis. He notices that paintings with such large figures are unusual for the artist, but do occur in his later work. The still life in the foreground also suggests a late date and can be compared to the fruit lying by the bouquet in another painting by Olis dated 1662 now in the Noordbrabants Museum, in Hertogenbosch.
