Nancy has a distinctive technique and uses the large 'U' shapes in her artwork to represent the body paint designs painted on womens' breasts when taking part in the women's ceremony. Many of her paintings depict women grinding wangunu, a grass seed used to make traditional damper. NR1827 LITERATURE: Nancy Ross Nungurrayi was born in the desert at Karrku, a large hill about 800 kilometres west of Alice Springs. Nancy was the sister of Naata Nungurrayi & George Tjungurrayi, both well known artists. Until her death, Nancy & her family lived in Kintore. Nancy painted complex series of patterns which depict the holy places from the "Dream Time" (Tjukurrpa) around her traditional homeland. The concentric circles refer to specific locations which are used for ceremonies. The parallel lines which connect these circles are ancestral paths called "song lines" created by the mythical ancestors (Tingari) of the Aborigines. In Nancy's work, the women are represented by a 'U' shape & the background colours & patterns represent different aspects of the landscape, like sand dunes & rocky outcrops called Tali & Puli respectively. This painting depicts a women's ceremony at the rock hole site called Ngaminya. This place is south west from the Aboriginal settlement of Kiwirrkura in Western Australia. In this painting the large 'U' shapes represent the body paint designs painted on the women's breasts for this ceremony.

During ancestral times a group of women camped at this site before continuing their travels east to Ngaminya, Wirrulnga and Wilkinkarra (Lake Mackay). While at the site the women made nose-bones, also known as marrapinti, which are worn through a hole made in the nose-web. These nose-bones were originally worn by both men and women but are now only worn by the older generation on ceremonial occasions. As the women continued their travels towards the east, they gathered the edible berries known as kampurarrpa or desert raisin from the small shrub Solanum centrale.’
