BIOGRAPHY: Landscape painter and lithographer Joseph Morviller, 1800-1870, was born in Paris, France. He studied fresco painting in England and France. He came to Boston, Massachusetts in 1852, painting his characteristic picturesque winter landscapes with genre elements. His images were published as chromo-lithographs by the Boston art-print publisher, Louis Prang.Morviller exhibited in Providence, Rhode Island; Chicago, Illinois; and New York City; as well as at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Philadelphia; and for twenty years at the Boston Athenaeum. His work is in the collections of the Toledo Museum of Art, Ohio; Amherst College, Amherst, Massachusetts; Stowe-Day Foundation, Hartford, Connecticut, etc.

      Joseph Morviller (American, 1800-1870) Winter Scene Signed and dated 'J. Morviller 1864' bottom right, oil on canvas 13 3/4 x 21 3/4 in. (34.9 x 55.2cm) Provenance Kennedy Galleries, New York. Richard York Gallery, New York. Sotheby's, New York, sale of March 31, 1993, lot 54. Oxford Gallery, Inc., Rochester, New York. Collection of Dr. Douglas S Holsclaw, Jr., Bala Cynwyd, Pennsylvania. The relined canvas is in good overall condition. Wear and light abrasions are present along the top edge where the canvas meets the frame. Two spots of inpainting are present at upper center, the larger about 1" wide. Another 1/4" spot is present at extreme left edge. An x-shaped spot of restoration is present in the central barn. Remnants of a milky green varnish are occasionally present. See Specialist's photos for details. Frame: 19 1/4 x 27 1/4 x 2 1/4 in.

      Joseph Morviller (American, 1800-1870) Along the Riverbank Signed 'J. Morviller' bottom right, oil on canvas 22 x 30 in. (55.9 x 76.2cm) Provenance Private Collection, Florida. James D. Julia, Fairfield, sale of August 16, 2017, lot 1325 (as Picnic on the Hudson). Acquired directly from the above sale. Collection of Dr. Douglas S. Holsclaw, Jr., Bala Cynwyd, Pennsylvania. The relined canvas in overall fair to good condition, with thin (stabilized) craquelure throughout. The work would benefit from a light cleaning, to remove the excessive glossy varnish, to balance the colors better and to remove the thin layer of dust throughout. Examination under UV light reveals a thick layer of old greenish varnish throughout, which makes it hard to inspect the painting. Yet, we can see some localized (relatively minor) inpainting across the horizon line of the painting (mostly in the foliage, but also in the upper parts of the water). Localized inpainting also visible at upper left corner in parts of the tree leaves and branches. Similar pattern opposite, in upper right corner, in the trees. Small repair at bottom left, on the side of the tree trunk that is cut down. Feathery retouch in the sky at upper center (inpainted craquelure mostly). Figures appear intact, although the thickness of the varnish, and the negative space around it, make it hard to confirm. See specialist's pictures taken under UV light for more details. Frame: 30 3/4 x 38 1/4 x 3 in.

      Unsigned. Painting has inscription on stretcher "Gift from Mr. Morviller to Grandma Dodd on her death to Sarah". Scene shows large house, possibly a tavern with connected buildings next to large pond/lake with horse and sleigh in front. Several people walk from building. Others are seated on sleighs, watching many skaters. A wonderful example of this artist's work who was known to do this type of scene. SIZE: 18" h x 30"w. CONDITION: Appears to be untouched. Has small puncture in sky and paint chip to right corner, otherwise very good. 9-91953.
