        A Paris, chez Briasson, 1741. 4th, artistic frontispiece engraved on copper by Guillaume Dheulland based on a design by Martin Dumont: topographical plan and view of the Astronomical Observatory, pp 8-XCII-368-2 with 6 plates engraved on copper and folded f.t. Slight browning, slight blooms. Coeval binding in full Bazzana leather, six-compartment spine with gold title and decorations, colored cuts, small defects on the spine and hinge.

Including a considerable discussion of the scientific observations made on Cook's second voyage.

        Pierre MOSNIER (Blois 1641 – Paris 1703) Laissez venir à moi les petits enfants Huile sur toile. 81 x 101 cm (Usures et restaurations) Pierre Mosnier est le fils de Jean Mosnier, dont il fut l’élève. Aussi élève de Sébastien Bourdon, il est reçu à l’Académie en 1674 avec Hercule se préparant à la défense de la ville de Thèbes, sa patrie, menacée par les Minyens, et recevant d’Apollon des flèches, de Mercure une épée et de Vulcain une cuirasse (conservé à l’école des Beaux-Arts de Paris), avant d’y devenir professeur en 1686. Son style, d’abord proche de Bourdon, devient plus rigide au contact de Charles Errard lors de son séjour à Rome de 1666 à 1672. Notre tableau peut être rapproché de l’Allégorie de Louis XIV anciennement conservée au Musée de l’Assistance Publique à Paris dans lequel on retrouve de grandes similitudes entre les traits des visages des amours et ceux des enfants. Les visages des figures féminines sont proches de celui de la femme en rose de l’Allégorie de Louis XIV et de ceux des femmes de Antoine et Cléopâtre, conservé en collection privée.

NOTES By the same hand as a drawing sold in these Rooms, 4 July 2000, lot 154, as two formerly with Crispian Riley-Smith and as one, of the same shape and size as the present one, sold at Sotheby's London, 5 July 2000, lot 351 (as French School).
